Fell swoop.

I wrote foul swoop. Thought no, fowls fly and swoop so it's probably that. Checked it by googling and realised that I've been saying it wrongly al these years.

It's fell swoop.

My mate emailed me and mentioned something about a 'stand-in' joke Grin Grin

Her mind was blown when I pointed out it was 'standing' joke.

She had no idea how she'd managed to go 52 years without knowing that!

INeedNewShoes · 12/01/2019 14:06

Wow! I thought it was foul swoop as well. I swear that's how I've heard it said.

Yulebealrite · 12/01/2019 14:09

The old meaning of “fell” to mean “savage,” “cruel,” or “ruthless” has otherwise pretty much died out, so that many people mistakenly substitute “foul” or “fowl” for “fell.” “Fell” in this sense is related to words like “felon” and “felony.

people who say it's "mute" point. Always makes me smile.

HildaZelda · 12/01/2019 14:39

People who say/write of when they mean have. Grrrrr Angry

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/01/2019 14:40

People who write “upmost” instead of “utmost.”

HelloDarlin · 12/01/2019 14:45

My husband said “tractor mortgage” this morning instead of tracker mortgage.
He laughs about MIL saying the wrong words, but does it all the time himself.
It does tickle me, and he hates being “corrected”, so I say nothing!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/01/2019 14:47

People who write "reign" instead of "rein" when they say "rein it in", "keep it on a tight rein", "have free rein".

And "tow the line" instead of "toe the line".

Yulebealrite · 12/01/2019 14:48

I like the tractor mortgage Grin

I'm always quite judgy about most mistakes like that but obviously I'm not perfect Blush

bare with me - arrrrgh!

AnneOfCleavage · 12/01/2019 14:49

But Mrs I think it depends on the context it's being used. Both are legitimate words but I agree folks do tend to say upmost importance which would be wrong.

SydneyCarton · 12/01/2019 14:50

Grin and “bare” it rather than “bear” it.....

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 12/01/2019 14:50

I read a book once in which the author wrote that neither she nor her husband were "milk and toast people".

Confused me for ages till I discovered that she must have meant "Milquetoast"!

hopeishere · 12/01/2019 14:52

Mute point and tow the line.

And draw for drawer boggles my mind.

blondeemily · 12/01/2019 14:52

ShalomJackie When starting a new job as a teenager I had "I am new so please bare with me" written under my name on my badge! Blush

guiltynetter · 12/01/2019 14:52

I didn't know it was utmost! I've never heard that, just with a P.

Yulebealrite · 12/01/2019 14:54

That's a new one on me curtains I've never heard that before.

running a muck is becoming popular on the www I notice.

Yulebealrite · 12/01/2019 14:55

Isn't it uppermost rather than upmost anne ?

My boss says physical calendar instead of fiscal calendar. Drives me mad.

cathyandclare · 12/01/2019 14:57

DD1 had been saying/writing when all sudden done instead of when all is said and done for years! Through English GCSEs and A levels, she was mortified when she found out.

Crunchymum · 12/01/2019 14:59

I recently used apocalyptic as opposed to apoplectic.

I genuinely thought it was "apocalyptic with rage" Blush

snowie01 · 12/01/2019 15:01

When I was a kid I used to think a dual carriage way was a George carriageway.

MitziK · 12/01/2019 15:01

Can I reserve a special place in Hell for people who say their 'girl dog' has not been 'spaded'?

  1. It's not a girl dog, it's a bitch.

  2. It's 'spayed'.

If nothing else, it gives me a mental image of them thinking the vet wanted to do something horrible to their largely unsocialised or trained precious pet with a garden implement and they're using it as a justification for back yard breeding.

snowie01 · 12/01/2019 15:02

Hate when people spell "Ketones" as "Keytones"
