Fell swoop.

I wrote foul swoop. Thought no, fowls fly and swoop so it's probably that. Checked it by googling and realised that I've been saying it wrongly al these years.

It's fell swoop.

clary · 12/01/2019 23:06

Oooh yes myself and yourself when you mean me and you. It's not posh or clever.

I correct the annoying salespeople who do it when they ring me up. I am trying to eradicate it one person at a time 😁😁

Ruth2009 · 12/01/2019 23:18

On route. People put it on facebook all the time

MerryInthechelseahotel · 12/01/2019 23:38

Llangennith I'm glad I'm not the only one! I liked imagining those Knights all dressed in white satin!

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 12/01/2019 23:45

I used to think "fucking hell" was "fucking how" because that's how my mum says hell. Didn't realise until I was about 15!

MeetJoeTurquoise · 13/01/2019 00:25

I think I’ve seen the worst one this week on fb... Dinning tabel for sale, must keep quiet, must not respond.

whiteroseredrose · 13/01/2019 07:22

I pronounced facade as fack-aid for years. And in front of the whole school read that the wise men a-certained from the shepherds.

Bluelonerose · 13/01/2019 07:34

I wonder how many of those are auto correct deciding what word to use.

My ds2 was telling me about a phrase of speech he heard a while ago Grin

AuntieStella · 13/01/2019 07:53

I have a nasty feeling we might see a lot of discussion of boarders (open or otherwise) in the coming months. I unfortunately, they won't be about residential schools.

I dislike ect for etc, though I always assumed it's a typo that wasn't picked up by autocorrect.

And of course autocorrect can make the most erudite person look semi-literate when it randomly inserts apostrophes, or decides to alter a word in some other way, unless you tell it not to.

QOD · 13/01/2019 08:18

Oh dear I say PIN number - I think it’s just a cloakism though 😉

I want to punch people who ask if you can borrow them some money

LadAlive · 13/01/2019 08:31

Whenever I read 'awry' my brain reads oary and hyperbole as hyper-bowl.
I am 58, I should know better. Blush

SlightAggrandising · 13/01/2019 08:44

The AA referred to "breaking" in the bloody telegraph last weekend. I despair.

AutumnCrow · 13/01/2019 08:52

I saw 'suey generous' for sui generis the other day.

HeyArthur · 13/01/2019 09:02

I couldn't care less, I know what people mean when they make these petty mistakes.

bluetit101 · 13/01/2019 09:08

I couldn't believe, back in October, when grown women on my FB were writing that they were taking their kids 'trickle treating' Grin

And I don't know why I hate it so much, but the misuse of the word 'his'
As in 'his going to school' 'his being naughty' Angry

GreenTulips · 13/01/2019 09:25

HeyArthur

Have you noticed most people are talking about themselves and their own mistakes?

Example I’ve read albeit many times and only recently realised its All be it - but it’s one word.

GreenTulips · 13/01/2019 09:27

hyperbole

Me too! It’s hi per bol lee

OoohAyyye · 13/01/2019 09:31

snowie01 I thought it was George carriageway when I was younger too. Grin

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/01/2019 09:32

HeyArthur, that’s all very well for you but often when something is riddled with errors it actually takes longer to read.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/01/2019 09:35

Just seen one on another read: discrete instead of discreet.

It just gives a niggling irritation when you see these things because your brain has to almost translate it! Yes it only takes a millisecond to do that but it’s irritating nonetheless.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 13/01/2019 09:47

There was a whole 1000 post thread on "another think/thing coming" a while back. It ended up in Classics.
The number of people who tried to excuse saying it wrongly as being "a regional thing" was incredible.
by the way,it's not "thing," it's "think!"

ShowOfHands · 13/01/2019 09:52

Purposely and purposefully have distinct meanings but rarely is purposely used when it's needed.
