A small part of a state or country separate from the main part- what do you call it?

Do you know what I mean? Where you get a state, county or region which forms a 'block' of continuous land, but there's a separate small part of it 'next door', or nearby, surrounded by the state, county, country next door. So this little fragment is in no way physically joined to the rest of the state/county/country.

I believe the Spanish state of Valencia has one, and I think I've read of English counties with that oddity!

Anyone know, or can give me some examples?

Do you mean "annexation" which describes the political process of extending national sovereignty over a new piece of land?

Looking at the definition of 'enclave' it looks like that might be the word you are looking for.

My ds is weirdly obsessed with this kind of thing so I opened the thread on his behalf. He very firmly says it's an exclave - an enclave is when a country or exclave is wholly surrounded by another country. So apparently an exclave can have a coast but an enclave can't. Alaska is the largest exclave according to him. He has enjoyed this post!
