For me it's:

  • the Syrian boy on the beach
  • Leah Betts
  • Millie Dowler at the ironing board
OP posts:

A policeman with his hair on fire at the Bradford football ground in the 1980's. He was running across the pitch...so haunting.
The vulture and child...just heartbreaking

ASAS · 11/01/2019 22:37

Andy Murray's press conference today. He's changing what it means to be a West of Scotland male.

goingtotown · 11/01/2019 22:46

70’s Vietnamese war. A young girl running towards the camera with severe burns, shocked & screaming in pain after a Napalm bomb attack hit her village.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 11/01/2019 22:52

Wasn't born at the time but saw it on a documentary about the Bradford FC fire. How quick went from 'there's a fire in the stand' to the inferno and the images of it.

9/11..the fire from the twin towers and the falling man. So many images from that day.

The photo taken of concorde with the fire behind it as it took off.

Nonomore3 · 11/01/2019 23:05

Images from the Rwandan genicide.
They haunt my dreams.

BringOnTheScience · 11/01/2019 23:22

My equivalent memories seem to be about the sounds as much as the images.

9/11 - I was on Mat Leave with DC1. Can recall as clear as anything exactly how I was sitting & feeding as the 2nd plane hit. Then how I was patting & winding as the first collapse began.

Lockerbie - The news reports that night & appeals for sightseers to stay away. The cockpit lying in the field.

Boxing Day tsunami - feeding DC2 this time, upstairs at the IL's, hearing the TV news.

Piper Alpha - I was in Aberdeen. The sound of the helicopters overhead while the flames were on TV. I knew several of the helicopter pilots.

goingtotown · 11/01/2019 23:25

Grenfell Tower.

BreakYourselfAgainstMyStones · 11/01/2019 23:30

Most of the above.

Lee Rigby is another one that stays with me. Just horrific.

LoniceraJaponica · 11/01/2019 23:33

“Also along those lines, the young Vietnamese girl running naked after (I believe) a napalm attack.”

Yes, very much so for me.
I vividly remember being made to watch Winston Churchill’s funeral at a young age. I also have memories of the Aberfan disaster. Many of the children were my age, and I had nightmares about it for ages afterwards.

Also:
The Twin Towers
Live Aid
The Yorkshire Ripper - I was a student in Leeds at the time. The fear was horrendous
Orgreave
Princess Diana's funeral - seeing Prince's William and Harry walking behind the hearse. My heart was breaking for them

louderthan · 11/01/2019 23:33

Grenfell Tower ablaze

hartof · 11/01/2019 23:40

Daniela Westbrook's nose. Terrified me from around 13, the photo was above my desk in English class and I couldn't look at it.

meow1989 · 11/01/2019 23:41

I had to stop looking at that Irish thread on page 2.

The vulture (I believe the photographer killed himself soon after)

The little girl running from napalm.

The twin towers with the smoke that looked like a face.

Baby p healthy.

There's so much awfulness in the world, I'm going to give DS an extra kiss before I go to bed tonight.

GreyIing · 11/01/2019 23:41

Rachel Corrie after she was run over by a bulldozer.

meow1989 · 11/01/2019 23:42

Oh god why did I Google Baylee All Ok?! What is it in us that we have to look knowing it will devastate us?
That poor poor darling.

PeachRose · 11/01/2019 23:42

Ian Huntley's face, the twat!

hartof · 11/01/2019 23:43

Just to add all the ones mentioned here are etched on my brain but for some reason Danielas nose really stands out.

meow1989 · 11/01/2019 23:43

Almon, obviously, autocorrect sucks.

cricketmum84 · 11/01/2019 23:43

The falling man 9/11

Fr Mychal Judge - chaplain to NY Fire Department. Died on 9/11

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 11/01/2019 23:59

The Bradford fire. I used to train stewards at football stadia and one of my training materials was the television coverage of the match, where the commentator notices the fire and mentions it almost casually, then you see it spread and the horror on everyone's faces and in the voices. It always makes me cry, so I usually left it to play whilst I went out of the room to get a drink of water.

Also the Twin Towers, I remember watching it on the telly at work in disbelief.

7Days · 12/01/2019 00:22

I was on that Irish thread back in the day, and later on one just about that Vulture picture.

Visceral.

YeahILoveSummer · 12/01/2019 01:14

DaffodillsAreHereAgain the photographer said he waited for 20 minutes for the bird to open its wings. He commuted suicide because he was depressed and had a drug problem.

It really is a haunting picture

cavycavy · 12/01/2019 01:25

The CCTV image of Charlotte Bevan walking out of the Bristol Royal Infirmary holding her baby in Dec 2014.

I had just had my baby and was slowly downspiraling into PND. The story was quite big at the time (local news for me) and it struck a chord on so many levels.

I still think about her now. If only someone had stopped her.

Aridane · 12/01/2019 01:32
  • Alan Kurdi, Syrian toddler, washed up,drowned on the shore
  • the largely unpublished pictures of his (less photogenic) drowned brother, ungainly lying over rocks
  • their dead mother, in billowing black robes, being removed from the sea
  • the famine / vulture picture (where the photographer later killed himself)
  • Grenfell tower ablaze
  • Vietnam pictures
