For me it's:

  • the Syrian boy on the beach
  • Leah Betts
  • Millie Dowler at the ironing board

@DontCallMeCharlotte it certainly wasn't to admire Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 11/01/2019 17:09

In fact, seeing it even now made me a bit angry!

SecretNutellaFix · 11/01/2019 18:20

The ones I have earliest memories of seeing are the Herald of Free Enterprise on it's side, Lockerbie, Hillsborough.

Other images that have stayed with me include the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first Iraq war and the oil fields set on fire in Kuwait, 9/11 and it's aftermath- I watched the second plane hit while watching a live TV broadcast and remember telling my mum not to be so stupid- it wasn't an accident just minutes before the second plane hit.

And the class photo of the children of Dunblane.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 11/01/2019 18:22

That's lovely @ChodeofChodeHall I do too. I have 2 DC's and I look at them and it makes it worse knowing that someone hurt their DC's of the same age. I also think about them and send them love and thoughts, it's nice to know I'm not alone Thanks

My SIL is Irish and she sent me a link to this Irish website before.

There are some amazing photos on there, but just to warn you, some of them are very graphic.

The photos of the burning twin towers with the editorial about people feeling no choice but to jump to death. Gut wrenching.
The photo of the black lady emerging white faced covered in the ashes of the collapsing towers. Her shock was palpable.

ChodeofChodeHall · 11/01/2019 18:32

WakeUp - Flowers to you, too, lovely.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/01/2019 18:36

Hillsborough. I have a friend who survived the crush.

longwayoff · 11/01/2019 18:40

Many of the above. This morning I called in to GP surgery, has a new picture on reception wall. Unusual picture said I. Yes, isn't it I haven't seen anything like it before. You probably have to be above 60 to recognise the mushroom cloud from an atomic bomb with fishermen in boats looking on from the Pacific.

Antiquevintageandrusty · 11/01/2019 18:41

Meredith Kercher - she was beautiful and I can stiill see her face. Horrible horrible story that hit home because I lived in Perugia for six months post uni at 21.

Sammysquiz · 11/01/2019 18:42

David and Samantha Cameron returning home after their son Ivan died. They both looked so haunted and exhausted, and the photos were so intrusive.

rackhampearl · 11/01/2019 18:45

I often think of the child and the vulture photograph when I'm thinking about moaning about something mundane. I don't know suffering. It's a haunting photo that has pulled me out of self pity several times.

LikeARedBalloon · 11/01/2019 19:19

Came on here to say Leah Betts as well OP. I can remember her parents saying if that image stopped just one person ending up in the same way then it was worth it. I've drunk alcohol and smoked a bit of weed but that's it. I was a teenager when that photo was circulated and I couldn't bear the thought of my parents feeling their pain.

Gazelda · 11/01/2019 19:29

This lady was truly 'in the moment' as the Pope went past her. Everyone else enjoyed the experience via their mobile phone.

Tony Nicklinson being told that his request to persue the right to die was being over ruled by the High Court. Such pain in his face Sad

Baby the Bulldog - just don't

A photo of some guinea-pigs in a hutch that was literally half filled with shit , they sat perched and terrified on top of the pile

recently · 11/01/2019 20:02

The aeroplane that crashed onto the motorway. Also the Hindenburg- very memorable image.

Ratbagcatbag · 11/01/2019 20:11

@lovinglola I went to Oklahoma for work on my own and in some free time I went to the memorial for bombing. It was one of the most moving things I've ever been too. I absolutely sobbed at different points of the memorial. I went into the city a few days later and was chatting to someone. She'd lost a friend in it, she said she couldn't bear to go and see it all. It was such a raw thing for everyone still. All because of one persons grudge.

Dimsumlosesum · 11/01/2019 20:22

Someone's ribcage covered in bits of charred flesh that the daily fail missed blurring out for a plane crash not long ago.

KenAdams · 11/01/2019 21:10

I'll be spending a long time on that Irish thread - 280 pages!

OP posts:
HildaZelda · 11/01/2019 21:15

@KenAdams, it's an excellent thread. I think some of the photos from the earlier pages may be missing as the thread started about 10 years ago and some of the links/images seem to be expired now.

snowie01 · 11/01/2019 21:23

I agree @Gazelda

CantWaitToRetire · 11/01/2019 21:42

I remember seeing a picture in the paper once that was taken in China during their “one child” policy. It was of a newborn baby girl that had been discarded in the gutter. The child was just lying their naked and dead and passers by were just glancing as they went on their way. Barely gave the baby a second thought. A subsequent picture showed an old man who had eventually come along and took pity. He picked up the child in a cardboard box and placed it in the bin Sad. It was so shocking I kept it and I have it in a cupboard somewhere. It never fails to shock and horrify me when I come across it again.

Anothermothersusername · 11/01/2019 21:45

The little Syrian boy on the beach. I will never ever forget that image. As a mum of a little boy myself it brought it home even more that for all the ranting there is about immigrants there is a human side behind it and children who did not ask to be in this situation. It’s just heartbreaking Sad

ReaganSomerset · 11/01/2019 22:32

I'm on page 53 of that Irish thread. Have had to stop, it's too hard. But I feel like I've got to keep going through the pictures, to try and not let all the horror be forgotten, iyswim?

Must recent one I've seen is a picture of an orphaned baby crying in the South Station in Shanghai, China, 28 Aug 1937. That baby is 81 now, if still alive, and no longer remembers being that small, but I still just want to pick it up and give it a cuddle. Sad
