Chinese Wedding Dresses

Has anyone bought a wedding dress from an ebay seller on China and if so, were you happy with it?

I had vehemently decided that I didn’t want a ‘weddingy’ wedding dress and now all of a sudden, with 10 weeks to go, I’ve decided I really do! I can’t spend more than £100 so I am drawn to the incredibly cheap and beautiful dresses from the Chinese manufacturers on ebay. Has anyone had a good experience and could recommend me a seller? (If that is allowed!)

Thanks.

I've just bought a wedding dress and was on a tight budget (less than £200) and was very tempted by the Chinese dresses!
I have read a lot of bad reviews about them turning up and being nothing like the pictures, or the sizes wrong even though custom measurements were used.

I personally wouldn't risk it as for one, it might not even turn up on time, and if it did and it wasn't right you'd be out of pocket.

I ended up getting my dress from Chi Chi Clothing - they have a beautiful wedding dress selection and I found a 10% discount code so mine was £130 including next day delivery. As they are a UK company returns are straightforward if it's not right

I hope you find something x

I did when i got married in 2011. Dress was actually really quite nice, but the fit was crap. I took it to a seamstress and she refitted it, added more beading and made a matching lace jacket. Worked out much cheaper than buying a UK dress.

But... don't buy it assuming it'll be perfect when you get it. Chances are it'll need work. You'd maybe have more luck at charity shops / ebay / local selling pages, then at least you could get a dress quicker and be able to try on if it is local.

Ethel80 · 10/01/2019 10:40

I wouldn't risk it either, sorry! I've read lots of stories about really poor sizing and long delivery waits.

Have you tried ASOS and similar? ASOS definitely do bridal and aren't too expensive although possibly a bit more than £100.

I bought my bridesmaid dresses from an ebay seller based in China. Did a lot of research first. The dresses were beautiful, amazing quality, I was really impressed. Made to measure sizes, all for about £40 each.

There are quite a few Facebook groups out there that can help with research, just put China Wedding Dresses into the search bar and see what comes up. I joined a few groups, and the same names came up consistently for good quality. There are a whole heap of dodgy sellers out there though!

I've added a pic, hopefully it will work! Bridesmaids looking serious!!

Thanks for the replies!

I have tried ASOS and I don't like anything on there Sad

I have just had a look at Chi Chi Clothing and do really love a couple that are on there so thank you for that tip!

I don't think I will risk the chinese dresses. If I could afford to waste the money if the dress turned out to be crap then I suppose it would be worth a punt but sadly it's a budget 'do!

I got bridesmaid dresses and they needed loads of alterations.

I got married in 2012 and got a Chinese dress. Got a knock off of a dress I fell in love with but it was over a grand. Paid £80 for it. Got it a size bigger then went to a seamstress to get it fitted. Cost £100 total and had so many compliments at my wedding as it had a nicer design that the expensive one. Would totally do it again.

FindaPenny · 10/01/2019 11:22

I ordered a dress from eBay in 2010. It was a bit more expensive as I asked them to make a particular design... It was about £300. It arrived in a bin bag but was a great fit and alot of work had gone into it. I would only ever order one with time to spare though as you can never be 100% that it will be as good as you want. My cousin actually also used the dress for her wedding, so 2 wears for the price of 1!

WardrobeInCrisis · 10/01/2019 11:29

To be honest, not unless you personally know the seamstress or trust someone who has.

I travel in China and the quality is incredibly variable. I have had lovely stuff made. But seen some horrors 🙈

dontcallmelen · 10/01/2019 12:38

Just coming on to say Chi Chi or monsoon/coast they both have sales on at the moment.

HowDidYouDo · 10/01/2019 12:42

I ordered my bridesmaid dresses from a website called aislestyle and they were lovely. I think they cost me about £85 each but the quality was brilliant.

Even DSis (who is obsessed with quality) was amazed at them!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 10/01/2019 12:42

I considered it but the reviews put me off.

End up buying an ex sample dress. Then 4 days before I decided it didn't like it and bought an off the peg from a shop and luckily found someone local to take it up super quick

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/01/2019 12:43

Try a high street brand, so you know what you’re getting.

Try Needle and thread in addition to to one’s mentioned above.

CalmDownPacino · 10/01/2019 12:52

Thanks everyone, much appreciated.

Think I am going to order from Chi Chi. At least I can return if it doesn't fit!

I bought my dress in 2008 from landy bridal. I ordered a Maggie Sottero knock off. I got bm dresses from somewhere else chinese.

My dress was lovely. I didn't ask them to make something specific. I chose quite a simple design that i could see on the site looked good. I ordered it to my measurements but added more on the waist and the length as didnt want it to not fit. I got a decent dress maker to fit it properly. She worked in a big bridal shop and recognised the design. Said it was no different to the original. After dressmaker costs I spent £220 including a veil i didnt use.

I would highly recommend them.

Its no different to ordering dresses from a shop as they get them sized up then refit to you. Difference is that my dress came from the knock off factory rather than the 'original' factory. I couldn't see my way to paying £1000 just to get one with the lable sewn in.

Its not like the shop let you take them back either.

ZenNudist · 10/01/2019 12:56

Oh i would also add that they have a big shutdown around chinese new year. Also if you are ordering a standard size order it big. If id have ordered in a shop they wanted me to get a 14 even though i was a 10. I reckon this is because you can resize a big dress much easier than a too small one.

pumpkinpie01 · 10/01/2019 12:58

I did and was conned. Got my bridesmaids dresses from chi chi London they were lovely fitted perfectly. Have a great day.

Thegirlwithnousername · 10/01/2019 13:12

I have looked on Debenhams and they have a few wedding dresses for under £100.
Also have a look at monsoon over Chinese dresses.

HelloDoris · 10/01/2019 13:14

I did! From JJs House, I was nervous, but it arrived and it was fine, not expensive quality but I was not looking for that.

www.jjshouse.co.uk/Ball-Gown-V-Neck-Tea-Length-Tulle-Wedding-Dress-With-Sash-Beading-Appliques-Lace-002014739-g14739

This was my dress, it looked lovely on, I ended up with a hole in the tulle (went down a slide) but after cleaning it still looks gorgeous.

If you want absolute perfection then don't.

wombatsears · 10/01/2019 13:17

Shameless placed mark

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 10/01/2019 13:22

My daughter used Mix Bridal for her bridesmaid dresses, the dresses were made to custom sizes and were spot on (all bar one dress that needed a very slight adjustment to the bust darts), they were well made and the bridesmaids looked lovely on the day.

Thegirlwithnousername · 10/01/2019 13:40

Also try on the local FB marketplace.
Mine is full of second hand/New dresses for under £100 you might get lucky!
