Just imagine how life could be in the UK if only Remain had won.

We wouldn't have any of this shit going on. Mark Carney said a while ago that Britain would be booming if it wasn't for Brexit. I don't think we'd have the dividend nation. We could properly focus on real problems people have like UC instead of the government just getting away with stuff because everyone is distracted. Personally, I'd have job security and a new car (that I need).
How would you be doing if Remain had won?

The key point is... if the member states agree unanimously. Which the UK wouldn’t have done. You can’t say a measure would be forced on us if we’d have had a veto...

IknowTheBoswellJoke · 10/01/2019 18:06

For a start, the EU should resign from the unanimity rule in three areas of foreign policy: EU positions in the field of human-rights issues in international forums, decisions on sanctions, and on EU civilian missions. In these fields, there is often no time to find the lowest common denominator.

From the same page I linked to. I'm pretty confused.....but, it reads like they can just go ahead with majority vote?

It's an insidious type of mission creep. Politicians deciding they know what's best for us, and telling us not to worry our little heads over things that 'will never happen'.

Do you mean Whitehall?
Unelected house of Lords politicians doing exactly that ?

I wouldn’t be worrying about not having any insulin.
We’d be going on holiday in April - we’ve cancelled and lost the deposit.

DippyAvocado · 10/01/2019 18:35

It would be interesting to know what the domestic policy focus would have been. Would JC's Labour opposition manage to have changed the austerity agenda at all with their policies? Is he just spectacularly useless about Brexit or would he be spectacularly useless in general? I suspect the latter.

ForalltheSaints · 10/01/2019 18:53

If we had voted remain we would be looking forward to David Cameron retiring this year and being replaced by Gideon Osbourne.

Mookatron · 10/01/2019 20:34

Boswell that article reports a proposal and nothing more. The section you quote reports a set of arguments given by an MEP supporting the change to a majority vote (which itself would need unanimous support from member states).

themoomoo · 11/01/2019 08:07

cheekysquirrel why have you cancelled your holiday?

MorrisZapp · 11/01/2019 08:15

Can someone give me a very simple, idiots guide to why voting leave is seen as racist?

I'm a remainer btw, but I live in Scotland in a city where racism very rarely makes the headlines.

Did the EU tell us to take a certain amount of immigrants?

Kazzyhoward · 11/01/2019 08:24

Did the EU tell us to take a certain amount of immigrants?

No, the EU has an open border policy, so we have no control of our borders with the EU. Blair "could have" imposed limits on immigration from the more recent EU entrants such as Eastern Europe, but chose not to! UK politicians over the last 2 or 3 decades have brought us to the state we are in now. It's not the fault of the people who voted in the referendum, it's the fault of a long chain of useless politicians running the country. Even back as far as the 1980's both Labour and Conservative were split on the Europe issue, both parties having pro and anti EU factions within them. The longer they ignored the underlying problems, the worse it's got, and now it's reached it's inevitable end game of complete chaos!

Deathraystare · 11/01/2019 09:16

It is all very worrying and depressing. Whatever the outcome it won't be for the good of the British people.

Whaever happens won't effect French and Spanish fishing - they always pleased themselves!

I am extremely worried about workers' and citizens' rights being eroded. Jobs disappearing.

I also feel angry that I should be wanting to vote for someone - there really isn't anyone. The suffragettes fought for the vote and I don't think I can vote for any of them. Hate them all now!!!

I should be more interested in the debate but I am afraid as soon as I hear the word 'Brexit, I stop listening. I get angry to as they can hardly discuss other stuff when all the talk is of Brexit.

LucheroTena · 11/01/2019 09:22

It’s the worst thing that’s ever been done to the people of this country. They should all be ashamed of themselves. The waste of money and destruction to the economy is criminal. It’s exposed many politicians as liars, fantasists and narcissists. I don’t know how we recover from this. We need a mass sweep of the whole political structure and those who can be appointed to these jobs. We need massive devolution to local governance.

HoustonBess · 11/01/2019 09:28

The reason why so many apparently shrewd politicians (Gove, Johnson etc) supported Brexit despite it being obviously bonkers was that they thought there would be a groundswell of support for it/some kind of patriotic Brexitty theme, not enough to give a Leave result but enough to give them solid support to become popular leaders.

I think if Remain had won there would still have been enough twatty politicans trying to attract support from Brexit types, the political atmosphere would be toxic if not as thoroughly screwed as we have now.

LucheroTena · 11/01/2019 09:34

I agree the whole freedom of movement and not employing any of the controls we had such as making checks, registering immigrants or deporting those who didn’t find work was a massive mistake and resentment about immigration has been simmering and ignored for years.

Of course the tories are responsible for this current mess but Corbyn and his ilk waved brexit through by whipping to support article 50 and then voting against amendments that would have reined the whole mess in.

Brexit has been a complete distraction from analysing and repairing the damage caused by bailing out banks and 10 years of austerity.

Giggage · 11/01/2019 12:26

To be fair, they would have found something else to distract us from those if it wasn't Brexit.
I still haven't forgotten (or forgiven) the expenses scandal
