Just imagine how life could be in the UK if only Remain had won.

We wouldn't have any of this shit going on. Mark Carney said a while ago that Britain would be booming if it wasn't for Brexit. I don't think we'd have the dividend nation. We could properly focus on real problems people have like UC instead of the government just getting away with stuff because everyone is distracted. Personally, I'd have job security and a new car (that I need).
How would you be doing if Remain had won?

@HollowTalk

I fairness we have had some MPs speaking out in exactly this way, David Lammy made a really good speech in the HoC about it. Unfortunately, these MPs are not the ones with the power. There is also enormous public pressure threatening violence if Brexit isn't delivered. I used to think the best result would have been a close Remain win because I wanted Leave voters concerns taken seriously, now I wish Remain had won a big majority I no longer think Leavers views deserve respect (this is after listening to them and following Vote Leave for nearly three years) when you strip their views down it almost always comes down to plain old fashioned racism.

I'd still be in my old (horrible) job, rather than my new (lovely) job. The vacancy for my new job only arose because my (lovely, brilliant) predecessor didn't feel comfortable here post-referendum, so moved back to her country of origin. Sad

That said, I'm passionately pro-remain.

PlumpSyrianHamster · 10/01/2019 09:07

Well, those 5000 jobs that are about to go at Jaguar might not have, for starters, but hey, it's all Project Fear and it's going to be fine . . .

To quote the immortal Rhett Butler, 'I reckon the French aristocrats thought the same until the moment they stepped onto the tumbrils.'

Mark Carney said a while ago that Britain would be booming if it wasn't for Brexit.

I find that very hard to believe, since most Western economies at this point of time aren't exactly doing great...

And in 50 years time when the demographic shit hits the fan do you think Europe will be better or worse off?
Think on.

Justaboy · 10/01/2019 09:29

I think a lot oif those job losses are more to do with the near hysteria over Diesel vehicles than much else, even the Chinese market losses.

A man From Rolls Royce not renowned for Diesel cars said the other day thier haveing very good sales figures in the international market place!

BrexitDestruction · 10/01/2019 09:41

What do you mean by "demographic shit", Aquilla?

BrexitDestruction · 10/01/2019 09:43

Yes, I agree JLR is facing other difficulties, but Brexits also cited as a factor. I think it shows there are enough challenges facing business today without adding Brexit.

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2019 09:43

Justaboy, Jaguar sent top workers over to China, a few years ago, in preparation for the electric vehicles.

It was on the strength of a Brexit Vote that job loses happened. They've been taking on agency workers for many years, rather than give Jag Contracts and they had talked about decreasing those numbers. But that didn't mean redundancies.

What's happened is that now workers on Jag contracts are being finished up.

The "it's upper management" line isn't true. Because normally you'd get to transfer to a full Jag contract after so long, but that now won't happen. So in reality, the job loses are throughout the plant.

My two Son-In-Laws quit last year because they knew things were going bad. We had a relative in Management there.

This is because of Brexit.

It was a massive employer in Liverpool and surrounding areas, workers travelled from North Wales. The hours were steady, overtime offered and the wages were really good.

It's a massive loss to Liverpool. One that we can't afford. House repossessions will come on the back of this.

We've been hardest hit by Austerity, our housing has been fucked up by the bedroom tax. We've lost many high Street stores over the last five years.

We certainly won't get any investment thrown our way from a Tory Government unless we riot.

So it's going to be fun.

As for the 'violence if Brexit doesn't happen' If they're the same Right Wing nut jobs that march through cities. They've never got through Liverpool, they don't get out the train station. So bring it on.

themoomoo · 10/01/2019 09:49

I don't understand how brexit is stopping you getting a new car?

Birdsgottafly · 10/01/2019 09:50

But back to the question. I think Brexit has been a nice distraction whilst Universal Credit has put people into poverty and homelessness etc has risen.

It's going to be something to blame when our living standards go back to those seen pre 1970's.

And whose responsible? The people, its what they wanted.

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 09:56

@KennDodd , i think we'd still have lots of problems and wholly reasonable discontent but we wouldn't be potentially crashing our economy (no Deal) as a way of dealing with it.

Helmlover · 10/01/2019 10:02

I’m confused- why are people slagging off the Labour Party in this thread? It was the Tories who got us into this mess! Why are people scapegoating Corbyn? Labour are offering the best possible deal.

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 10:04

@Helmlover they could offer us all a free trampoline and it would be just as effective. We haven't got time for Labour's lovely offers.

BrexitDestruction · 10/01/2019 10:12

The best possible deal is the one we already have. The EU won't re-negotiate with Labour or anyone, they've repeatedly said so. There is no time left. They have no guarantee of winning a GE.

Labour have just (mostly, with the exception of some MPs) waved this whole thing through, knowing fine well it will hurt the poor and vulnerable the most. They believe in unicorns just as much as the right wing Brexits. Very poor indeed.

Glitteryfrog · 10/01/2019 11:03

I don't understand how brexit is stopping you getting a new car?

Same reason people aren't buying houses or buying stuff from the high street.
I'm not going to make any expensive decisions unless I know my job is going to exist in six months.

Mookatron · 10/01/2019 11:08

On an entirely personal level, I wouldn't be sitting on my hands to prevent typing 'just fuck off you thick twat' all over social media and getting into fights that feel terrible.

And I wouldn't have this horrible simmering rage in my stomach that ignorant thug culture is being allowed to decide what happens to ME.

Katerinablum66 · 10/01/2019 11:35

Life would still be crap in my brexit voting austerity hit and plagued with underinvestment northern town without a doubt. But maybe not as crap as it certainly will be after March when there’s even less money to go around ....

Hottoddy1 · 10/01/2019 11:48

We just bought a bigger house and I am unexpectedly pregnant with no 3. My OH is the biggest earner and his job is in an area that will be hard hit by brexit. My ideal job will also be affected by brexit but I also can earn money in another area but earning capacity will be affected at least for 6 months by pregnancy and birth. We are both waking at night with stress at the moment and hoping it won’t happen. How many other people will face losing homes and financial hardship if there is big job losses. I wish one of those in charge would grow a backbone and stop this nonsense. The referendum should never have been run it was completely irresponsible to let people vote on such an ill definined idea. People projected whatever they wanted onto it. We just need to say no, we’re not doing this, end of.

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 11:53

@Hottoddy1 , I'm sorry this is so stressful. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
While I can't wave a magic wand and make your economic concerns go away, can I point you over to the Preppers topic where there may be some helpful ideas- lurk or start a thread. To help with practical contingency thinking. No tin foil hats. No paranoia. You don't need to Become a prepper. Just ask. Away from the heat of Brexit threads although obviously a lot of people are on there with Brexit it mind.

IknowTheBoswellJoke · 10/01/2019 12:04

I'm sure we'd be just thrilled to be getting involved with an EU Army Hmm

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 12:12

Which any member can opt out if@IknowTheBoswellJoke

IknowTheBoswellJoke · 10/01/2019 12:23

With a veto? The EU are considering doing away with consensus on foreign policy, and using a majority vote.

bellinisurge · 10/01/2019 12:26

Ireland and a few other members of the EU are non-aligned.
