Hi all you clever people. Please can someone try and find a quote for me as I have not been able to locate it again. It is something like the path to success/high places (or similar) being like a winding stair and not direct. I think I remember it having a stair metaphor in it and if I remember correctly it is not going to be a very modern quote. Thank you.

There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs?

All the way to success is through winding stairs??

"All rising to great place is by a winding stair."
Francis Bacon 1561-1626 (does that count as modern?))

"Life is a journey up a spiral staircase; as we grow older we cover the ground covered we have covered before, only higher up; as we look down the winding stair below us we measure our progress by the number of places where we were but no longer are. The journey is both repetitious and progressive; we go both round and upward."

Or success is a staircase, not a doorway

I knew there were clever people on here. These are all excellent quotes and the one I was thinking of, but could not recall, is among them - the Francis Bacon quote. Thank you all so much - this has really helped me out :)
