Please check my grammar so I don’t make an arse of myself

I’m challenging a statement and being picky over what I believe is a grammar mistake so I need to know I’m correct!

The sentence I believe is incorrect:

“...socialises with family friend’s children”

Family friends is plural so surely this should read

“...socialises with family friends’ children”

To give context, this is about my daughter, her learning disabilities and who she socialises with. I have stated that she has no friends as such at school, and her relationships are with children of families who I am friends with.

Yes I think your version is correct, the first version means one family friend.

ArabellaUmbrella · 09/01/2019 12:44

Or rather, the children of one family friend.

Dinosforall · 09/01/2019 12:44

Yes the second one, though I would put "with the children of family friends" as I think it is easier to read and leaves no room for ambiguity.

Sparklfairy · 09/01/2019 12:45

If you mean 'children of (multiple) family friends' then you are right

If you mean 'children of A family friend' then you're not

WindowsSmindows · 09/01/2019 12:45

I think your grammar is correct.
But why does it need to be corrected?
Are you angry at them?

SandunesAndRainclouds · 09/01/2019 12:45

I agree Dino that reads better.

Thank you all!

Sparklfairy the first one.

Windows I’m having to ensure that my daughter has access to the services she needs to be in a mainstream school. Her EHCP has been changed, I don’t agree with the changes so I’m challenging it.

I think you're correct, assuming you mean multiple family friends, but I also think it's very clunky, so second Dinos' rewording suggestion.

LimpidPools · 09/01/2019 12:48

Oops, too slow!

Time40 · 09/01/2019 12:49

Yes, the second one is correct in that context. I also think that "with the children of family friends" is clearer and easier to read, though.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 09/01/2019 12:51

I’ve corrected the grammar and suggested the better wording.

I was doubting myself, think I need to step away from the screen for a while...

You are correct. The apostrophe should come after the s to indicate the word is plural.
