Sick note confusion

Please could anyone advise on this sick note query. If a sick note dated Thursday 3rd January says to refrain from work for 4 weeks. When would the person need to go back to work?

Would it be Thursday 31st January or Friday 1st February?

Usually a fit note in England states the dates it is applicable from and to which are inclusive. On that basis I'd say you are expected to return to work on 1st Feb, unless you get signed off for longer.

Thanks it was issued by a hospital but only has the date it was written and 4 weeks. I asked at the GP today and the two receptionist told me a different date each. It would be much easier to have had an actual return to work date.

Ask a doctor rather than a receptionist would be my advice.

Where I work the roster would be shown as you returning on Thursday 31st, otherwise you would be off for 4 weeks and one day?
I'm not a doctor though!

As I understand it you would return on 31st January as Thursday the 3rd would have been day one. So a week would be Thursday to Wednesday.
