Can I freeze defrosted prawns?

lardass88 · 08/01/2019 13:53

Just that really. I was planning on using some prawns that have been defrosted in a meal tonight. It serves four so I was wondering would it be safe if I divided the rest up into plastic containers and froze them to use again?

No.

DeltaFlyer · 08/01/2019 13:55

No. You should never refreeze thawed food.

Cherylshaw · 08/01/2019 13:55

No you can't refreeze something that has been defrosted

NO!!!

PatriciaHolm · 08/01/2019 13:57

Only if you cook them first.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 08/01/2019 13:57

Do you mean cook them and freeze portions of the cooked food? If so, that's fine.

NannyR · 08/01/2019 13:59

You can actually refreeze things like mince if it was frozen raw, defrosted and then thoroughly cooked, it's then ok to freeze the cooked shepherds pie, spag bol etc. I certainly wouldn't risk prawns though.

SpoonBlender · 08/01/2019 14:02

I'll refreeze some things, but not seafood - far too risky. Bang them all on today's dinner.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 08/01/2019 14:05

You can freeze them if they have been cooked since defrosting

Taken from the NHS website

"You can cook frozen meat and fish once defrosted, and then refreeze them."

lardass88 · 08/01/2019 14:08

They are like these (hope the picture has attached) the menu is for four people but only I eat prawns. Was hoping to batch cook some meals and bung them in the freezer but perhaps not now :/

This.

PuppyMonkey · 08/01/2019 14:11

I don’t think I’d risk this with prawns tbh.

Wildcate · 08/01/2019 14:13

The ones you have are cooked already.

Nope, I wouldn’t. And I’m fairly blasé about food.

titchy · 08/01/2019 14:24

No. Food can be frozen once per state - so OK to be frozen raw, then cooked and frozen once more. Cooked food, like the packet you've shown, cannot be frozen, defrosted then frozen again.

Looks like you have a lot of prawns to eat tonight!

lardass88 · 08/01/2019 14:27

🤦🏼‍♀️ I'll not risk it then. I assume I could keep some out (in a separate) pot and reheat the pasta tomorrow and put the cold prawns in?

No

DoingMyBest2010 · 08/01/2019 14:36

Nope!

donajimena · 08/01/2019 14:37

Just eat them. Prawns are fab.

katekat383 · 08/01/2019 14:39

No.

SoupDragon · 08/01/2019 14:40

I assumed they were raw frozen prawns when I replied.

CharlyAngelic · 08/01/2019 14:41

no

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/01/2019 15:02

Keep them in the fridge and make sandwiches, salad or something else with the rest tomorrow.

I probably would refreeze them, have done and have never had an issue doing so but am well aware that this is not allowed.

lardass88 · 08/01/2019 15:06

@BarbaraofSevillle good idea. Thanks everyone 😊

I would only defrost as many as you need for 1 portion and then I’d freeze the prepared sauce alongside the still frozen prawns for next time you want to eat that dish
