Would you still eat this?...

I bought a seriously strong melting pot a few weeks ago. It's basically melted cheese in a glass pot that you heat up and eat.

I've since heard that these have all been recalled due to a risk of the glass pot breaking upon heating.

I can't be arsed with faffing around taking it back to Asda so it will just end up in the bin/recycling.

I was looking forward to trying it 😬

Would you risk it and eat it or shall I take heed and throw it?

If it's in date, and the recall is because of the container, I'd scoop the cheese out into an oven-safe dish (Pyrex or something) and eat it anyway. It's not like they've recalled it because of a food poisoning concern, so the contents are safe to eat.

Well if you heat it up and it doesn't break, eat it 😁

ChristmasRaven · 08/01/2019 13:34

Cam't you scoop it out of the glass pot and heat it in something else?

Can you decant the cheese into another safer pot? Or just try it anyway, if the glass breaks you'll be able to see and can throw it away, but the likelihood is it will be fine.

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/01/2019 14:33

I'd scrape it out and put it into one of my own oven dishes and heat it that way.

I wanted to try those. I kept seeing a thing on FB where you entered your details and they gave you a coupon for a free one, but I tried it a couple of times and it didn't seem to work and I forgot to look for them in the shops. I guess I'll never have one now Sad.

But then we have so much leftover cheese, what I should be doing is googling how to make this into special melty cheese, ie do you just melt the cheese or do I need to add something?

ShartOfGold · 08/01/2019 14:44

@BarbaraofSevillle hmm... sounds like a good idea but I'm unsure how you'd go about making it. Maybe google cheese fondue recipe and see what comes up?

According to the ingredients on the melting pot, you need..

Extra mature cheddar cheese
Reconstituted slimmed milk
Water
Butter
Maize starch
Whey powder
Salt
Preservative
Pepper...
🤔

Oh and thanks all for the replies... I may try it.

I’d either live life on the edge and risk heating it. A good chance it won’t break!

Or try and scoop the cheese out and heat it in a baking dish, then dig in with bread

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/01/2019 15:26

Thanks shart. That just sounds like cheese sauce to me. Maybe a very thick cheesy cheese sauce.

NanooCov · 08/01/2019 17:08

I would. I imagine it's stored in the fridge? If so, I'd let it come up to room temp before whacking in the oven - less chance of shattering due to the sudden change in temperature then possibly? (Note I have no clue as to the science behind this!)
