Hi,

I am planning a surprise overnight trip for my dh bday.

Any recommendations for fun kid free things to do.

I was thinking rustique for evening meal and hotel du vin for the hotel.

Restaurant ideas for breakfast or lunch would be greatly appreciated! As are activities in general

Skosh for dinner!

messyhousetidymind · 07/01/2019 23:51

We had a good meal in rustique recently great value for fab quality

FanSpamTastic · 07/01/2019 23:57

We stayed at the The Grand Hotel and Spa, which was lovely. We went to Betty's for lunch and had a night out at the Theatre.

Leeds2 · 08/01/2019 00:55

Everybody raves about Betty's but I didn't realise that a) there was one in York as well as Harrogate and b) you could go for lunch instead of just cake! I gather the queues are horrendous, but it is on my bucket list of places to go.

Move2WY · 08/01/2019 17:37

Thanks everyone! Will heck out skosh too

The Ivy's lovely for breakfast/brunch, also recommend Skosh. Friends rave about The House of Trembling Madness for a drink.

Move2WY · 08/01/2019 17:44

Oh great stuff thanks!

Ghost hunt!!

IggyAce · 08/01/2019 17:50

Gusto is lovely for food.
Definitely a ghost hunt, we did one that starts at the Golden Fleece it was more about the darker history of York than about its ghosts. But very informative and in some parts very sad.

Move2WY · 08/01/2019 17:54

Will the ghost walk be during dinner time though?

Would The Ivy or 1331 be better for a late breakfast breakfast

I’m not sure if this would interest you but me and my boyfriend went to Eden camp which is only a short drive away from York. It’s an old ww2 p.o.w camp museum. We enjoyed it :)

Move2WY · 08/01/2019 21:49

Thanks LB thats sounds interesting!

It’s about £10 each and they have a little cafe. Definitely a couple of hours to walk around. Something to do if you like stuff like that!

Ishoos · 08/01/2019 21:57

You can book afternoon tea at Betty’s - and then you don’t have to queue. Lovely with a glass (or 3) of fizz.

milkmoustache · 08/01/2019 21:58

Pig and Pastry for breakfast. I could stay there all day!

NoNeedToArgue · 08/01/2019 22:00

Ghost walks are at about 7 - have dinner afterwards! If you are foodies Le Cochon Aveugle is amazing. Rustique is also good but has gone downhill recently imho! Although if you've never been before you wouldn't know...

Move2WY · 08/01/2019 22:10

Will look up pig and pastry!

I saw le cochon in my search but looked too formal really

Betty's is massively overrated. But little Betty's in stone gate is less crowded. House of trembling madness also in stone gate is great.

guffaux · 08/01/2019 23:44

ambiente if you like tapas- there are two- fossgate is my preference but goodramgate one is good too - or at lunch time there is one at little stonegate -sotanas- try the Everyman cinema- snacks and drinks by waitress service -cost sofas, lovely atmosphere, and there is a great (I mean REALLY great) exhibition at the art gallery- kaiser chiefs involved, we couldn't tear ourselves away - have fun

guffaux · 08/01/2019 23:45

cosy sofas- you dont pay extra lol

sandgrown · 08/01/2019 23:50

The Railway museum is good and free I think and I love the Castle Museum .We like the Guy Fawkes Inn to eat and I think they have rooms too .

MorningsEleven · 08/01/2019 23:51

If you're that end of town I'd look at places like La Tazzina, Delrios , Skosh, Meltons, Rattle Owl - they're all independently owned so you'd be supporting local businesses.
