Suggestions for mumsnet forum improvement

Loka123 · 05/01/2019 14:32

I think it'd be great if they used features like thumbs up / thumbs down or just thumbs up that we can "vote/support" other people's comments on people's threads as would prevent everyone repeating the same thing just to reiterate to the OP that there's lots of us thinking the same thing.

Also, perhaps a way to reply to a specific comment by having a reply which will box quote the person's comment and can write reply underneath it rather than bother with @ user name.

Not sure if mumsnet has a feedback contact so thought I'd post here and see what people think? A lot of forums have these features and I think it would be a great addition for this one.

OP posts:

My suggestion was you can edit if no one else has posted after you. It allows corrections to be made - especially to titles

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2019 18:52

But posters could be typing their reply just as the OP is rewriting history.

dogzdinner · 05/01/2019 19:06

It's an option on other forums and works. I don't know what the settings are. It also says that it's been edited

I thought this was netmums.

I already totally ignore purposely posters who bold my own words back at me or @ me, so I'd get really tetchy if I was quoted in a special box.

I know what I said. Don't need it copying back at me by some passive aggressive schoolmarm type. Because the people who quote at you are generally doing it to tell you you're wrong.

If I like something, or agree with something, I say so. It takes about a milli-nano-second more than pushing some emoji button would. I always imagine people who communicate via FB emojis to be the sort of drips who walk around doing thumbs up signs in real life, like Alan Partridge.

Edit button, we kind of hsve, as others have said, except it's called "the OP has asked us to delete this thread because the fact she's a woman who's just celebrated Christmas at her in-laws is outing button"

SpawnChorus · 05/01/2019 21:20

HoliestGhost - yes it is necessary! Yesterday I googled whether it's safe to eat out of date houmous, only to be answered by Mumsnet thread where I'd asked the question 10 years ago Grin

NotANotMan · 05/01/2019 21:20

Mumsnet is great the way it is. We don't want those changes.

SpawnChorus · 05/01/2019 21:21

HoliestGOAT...doh.

Nacreous · 05/01/2019 21:25

I'd quite like both the suggestions here. It's really hard to follow who has said what on threads as there are often many many comments saying exactly the same thing, and I find it hard to recall exactly which username said what when they are different things.

I think both sound like a good idea, the reply box under a post would stop people getting annoyed with people putting their words in bold and using the @, it would just be a comment under their comment.
It can be really time consuming on a really long thread to go back and identify who has posted what and to ensure you use the right username ( I don't really remember usernames as I am just reading posts rather than usernames so remembering the correct spelling etc can be a pain)

And thumbs up or down are neither here nor there so people could use if they wanted or don't if they don't. As sometimes I do think, on occasions that people simply shouldn't post certain things but then don't want to get into the big exaggerated backlash from saying they are rude, so a thumbs down would probably cover it.

I wouldn't mind them showing my name as giving them a thumbs down though, I don't need it to be anonymous but it should only be allowed to be actioned once per user. Not that it would stop people who have all different usernames but it would be a start.

I think the majority are happy that MN is a bit different to other sites .
If it ain't broke....

Hen2018 · 05/01/2019 22:07

A big Royal Family board so threads discussing the imagined minutiae of the Royals could all be moved there.

Lweji · 05/01/2019 22:10

The little changes they've done over the years have been the subject of heated protest, not to mention the millions of bugs that affect the boards whenever anything is changed.

Better stay as it is.

Hen2018 · 05/01/2019 22:12

I know @sparkling but they pop up all over the place.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2019 22:12

I still haven't totally got over 'Most Active' being renamed 'Trending'. Shock

helacells · 05/01/2019 22:13

Just copy reddit and it will be great. Way too small and limited as it is

hazeyjane · 05/01/2019 22:42

Is it?? How the fluff didn't I notice that!!

I don't want it like Reddit...Reddit makes my eyes go funny.

Lweji · 05/01/2019 22:44

Is that advice for MN?

a) I'm sure Reddit must be under copyright.

b) MN is big enough as it is, thanks. The quality of pps has decreased since it got bigger after the penis beaker. It's well known. Grin

SoupDragon · 05/01/2019 22:52

Maybe you should go Reddit rather than MN then. Not every forum has to be the same or for everyone.

The layout of Reddit is shit anyway. I can't imagine why MN would want to copy it.

littletortoise · 05/01/2019 22:55

I think a poll widget or thumbs up/down would be useful on AIBU or baby name threads where a definite who is bu/is this name nice? sort of answer is required and there may be lots of answers to trawl through. But otherwise no. I like words.

BIWI · 05/01/2019 22:58

No, no, no, to copying Reddit!

It's impenetrable after more than 3 or 4 people have replied to a post.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the way MN is structured or laid out.

KylieJennersTopLip · 05/01/2019 23:04

Fuck no

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 05/01/2019 23:06

Can all members remember they don't own Mumsnet?

Whether you've been here 5 years or 5 minutes your opinion and choices are not superior to someone elses.
