Suggestions for mumsnet forum improvement

I think it'd be great if they used features like thumbs up / thumbs down or just thumbs up that we can "vote/support" other people's comments on people's threads as would prevent everyone repeating the same thing just to reiterate to the OP that there's lots of us thinking the same thing.

Also, perhaps a way to reply to a specific comment by having a reply which will box quote the person's comment and can write reply underneath it rather than bother with @ user name.

Not sure if mumsnet has a feedback contact so thought I'd post here and see what people think? A lot of forums have these features and I think it would be a great addition for this one.

OP posts:

The Apple emojis make it all look a bit messy especially in thread titles. Also not everyone can see them properly. So some just look like boxes with crosses in to some.

NOTthepinkranger · 05/01/2019 16:56

Hence be saying I’d like a MN one

DramaAlpaca · 05/01/2019 16:59

One of the reasons I enjoy MN is that it doesn't have the features the OP wants. We actually have to talk to each other!

I don't want the site dumbing down. It would be like Facebook, the Daily Mail, Reddit, Netmums... no thanks.

I'd be against a like button. I'd rather have threads with articulate comments and the possibility of discovering interesting opinions at a tangent.

I'd also be against quote boxes. These can get completely out of hand, I've seen the second post on a thread use a quote box containing the whole of the first post, simply ludicrous!
Quote boxes contribute to making the discussion disjointed, when it could be free flowing.

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 17:18

I love emojis but having lots of them could be a slippery slope to glittery banners and countdowns.

EnidButton · 05/01/2019 17:20

Agree that 🙄 is way better as an eye roll than Hmm.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2019 17:25

I think Hmm can mean an eye roll, or 'what are you on about' or whatever really. Sometimes it's used to show the OP's feelings about themselves.

Glittery banners and tickers

I’m ambivalent about thumbs up/down but I really hate the function on other sites of having a reply which will box quote the person's comment and can write reply underneath it. It’s so hard to read down a thread and looks v old fashioned. That’d really put me off.

The worst on other sites is the signature though. So glad MN does not do that!

MarshaBradyo · 05/01/2019 17:28

No thanks there’d be no where left that was simple and easy on the eyes if mn changed to be like reddit

hazeyjane · 05/01/2019 17:30

No thanks to things up/down

No thanks to reply boxy things

And I don't like the @poster thing. I preferred it when people just bolded your name (which I still do)

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2019 17:31

I agree about the @ thing. I switched it off straight away. Did anyone ask for that function?

MarshaBradyo · 05/01/2019 17:32

I’ve switched it off no way would I want an email but also just bold, which is much better

marmitedoughnut · 05/01/2019 17:39

One thing I would like to see is getting rid of the need to bookmark using the little bookmark button. Every other forum software seems to just go automatically to new posts when you click on a thread.

I always thought the link at the top that says 'I'm watching' was supposed to show/should show the threads I have bookmarked - not so for me.

ginghambox · 05/01/2019 17:43

Anything with Brexit or EU automatically goes to the -echo chamber- that is the brexit board

bourbonbiccy · 05/01/2019 17:52

I honestly don't think it would bother me either way as I'm not that passionate about it. If I didn't like the changes, I probably just wouldn't use them.

I do think sometimes it can be a pain to copy and paste quotes you want to comment against so I would maybe use a comment box below a statement.
I do use the @ function as it helps identify who you are aiming statement at ( as people get wrongly offended or misunderstand the posts of others ) and as PP have said if they don't like it they switch it off. And it's much easier to get their name accurate.

If you're only new on here, be prepared to be rudely and angrily disagreed with over the littlest of things, it's a kind of given now.

NOTthepinkranger · 05/01/2019 17:54

I didn’t even know you could @ someone I always wondered why people done that, I only ever use the mobile site though.

Witchend · 05/01/2019 17:57

Not up and down, but perhaps a "likelihood of being a troll" button. You click on it if you think it's a troll, and the more clicks on the troll button per visitors on the page, the higher likelihood of them being a troll.

umpteenpinecones · 05/01/2019 17:59

I'd like bookmarks that actually work on a Chromebook.

bourbonbiccy · 05/01/2019 18:01

I didn't actually know you could bookmark things, although I suspect there are a lot of function I'm unaware of.

mumofblueeyes · 05/01/2019 18:06

I would like them to stop removing all the interesting posts due to privacy - if you decide to put something up (esp on AIBU) then they should stay up, even if you don't like the answers you are getting. Genuine mental health etc should be removed but other than that they should stay. More and more seem to disappear each day....

throughtheeyeofaneedle · 05/01/2019 18:06

I'd like a quote button, where you can easily quote a previous post so people know which post you are replying about. I spend far to much time scrolling back up a thread to see what someone's response is about.

HoliestGoat · 05/01/2019 18:08

I've never understood why threads don't eventually get deleted - is there a reason it's necessary to still be able to see a ten year old thread about a poster's verucca?

dogzdinner · 05/01/2019 18:14

I would like to see a reply to option and quote option. When someone says I agree with bob - you've no idea what Bob said unless you scroll back. Also should be able to edit posts if no one else has posted after you

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2019 18:24

An Edit button would lead to all sorts of history being rewritten.

Yes, yes, yes to this. It’s really pissing me off.
