Amazon order that i didn't place!

I just picked up my tablet for a bit of small hours Mumsnetting and saw a notification that four items had downloaded - it's detective novels by an author I've never heard of, and I have an email thanking me for my order which totals £17.99!

I spent nearly the whole day driving home from a holiday yesterday and certainly didn't place any Amazon orders! Any ideas what's happened? I think I can cancel the order and get a refund but I'm concerned that there seems to be a security issue.

Don't trust the email. Possible phishing.

Log into Amazon account via new browser page, not link from email and check orders that way.

Bloodybridget · 05/01/2019 03:14

Thanks NeverTalks, yes I will do that, I won't use links in the email.

Are you sure the email is actually from Amazon? Be careful it isn't a scam designed to lure you in.

Check "Your Orders" on your Amazon account before doing anything. If there is no record of the order, and none of your debit or credit cards have been debited then I would just delete the email.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 05/01/2019 03:19

Email scam, very common. Its like the tv licensing and apple one.
Delete, block.

Also change your Amazon password.

Bloodybridget · 05/01/2019 03:36

Thanks all! I will check my account and change login in the morning.

Just to add - the eBooks are there on my Kindle app.

Can you find a location as to where the device was when the books were bought?

I dont know if thats possible.

DD has had her kindle 12 months, last wwek (Xmas present) & I got my first unexpected £3.99 bill for Amazon freetime or somerhing as her free 12 months is up.

Could it be something like that, where Amazon 'choose' your books Confused

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 05/01/2019 03:45

That's different. You can return the downloads and get a refund. I'd also change password and contact Amazon.
Just had a thought-you can gift kindle books now-has somwine done that?

Bloodybridget · 05/01/2019 03:47

Skaters I can't look at my account right now (without starting up my laptop downstairs) but I will see if it's a genuine order and what information I can get.

Bloodybridget · 05/01/2019 03:48

Whatfuckery I can't imagine why anyone would give me those four books, it's not like I know the author!

Thanks again for all the responses and suggestions. I have got the order refunded and changed my password after a very slow and frustrating convo with customer service. The option to return the order online just didn't work (i.e. option to return wasn't in drop down list ).

Do you save your payment card details on Amazon? I think I would unclick that option Sad

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 05/01/2019 10:58

Do you have Amazon Household set up? Someone may have forgotten to switch profiles and ordered on your account by mistake.

Bloodybridget · 05/01/2019 20:14

I don't have Amazon Household and only live with DP. Yes I could take off the saved card, thanks for the suggestion Floss.

DC2 (aged 1) bought me a Terry Pratchett book once.

I was convinced it was some kind of hack until I discovered you could just open the Kindle and buy things!

Bloodybridget · 05/01/2019 20:34

Sandettie did you read it?

Bloodybridget I haven't yet, it's still on my Kindle though. I figured that asking for a refund was going to be more hassle than it was worth, given that it only cost a fiver. I'm not ruling it out, although I've not had time in the last couple of years to read any books at all, due to children, life etc. I miss books. Thankfully the family Audible subscription gets more use!
