Soaking your fingers in washing up liquid

I was thinking about this the other day but have been inspired by the Dettol bath thread.

I’m sure I remember my grandma advising soaking one’s nails in either Fairy Liquid or more likely Palmolive. Like for 15 minutes or so, to ‘strengthen’ them

Was this a weird thing of my family or was it a thing (60s)

Nope but eating a cube of raw jelly a day apparently did in the 70's. Grin

Yes I remember but I grew up in Australia- I think it was Palmolive - most like just an advertising gimmick to try and make washing up glamorous for all those housewives!!

I loved eating raw cubes of jelly as a kid. Its a wonder Mum's jellies ever set!

It was a Fairy Liquid advert, not beauty advice. From 60s or 70s

Woman was at manicurist (rare treat) and was soaking her nails in small bowl of green liquid believed to be some mail-strengthening potion. Then the twist that it's washing up liquid. That's so kind to your hands and nails that it won't do any harm at all, and you can carry on with your professional manicure.

There was a famous tv ad - lady at hairdresser having a mani soaking her fingernails. Manicurist told her she was soaking them in Palmolive (or was it Fairy?) client displayed shock and surprise, maincurist explained how wonderfully soft Palmolive was and kind to hands. Client admires her now-soft hands in wonder and delight. Black and white I think.

God, I’m old.

You're right - Palmolive !!

Ha!

Just shows how gullible my grandma was! At least I didn’t dream this up. Thanks all!
