Fuck! What have I done to my car?

Bashed a high kerb. Can't call DH, he's at work. Think the hubcap is pushed in rather than the tyre coming off?

Is it safe to drive? Do I need to take to garage?

If you can get a lorry driver to help they have seriously superior jacks.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:36

DH says no and that the edge of the tyre has come away from the metal interior

Tell him to look again. The flimsy plastic hubcap has been hit against a kerb and pushed inward.

If you stop a lorry driver for this he will have a right laugh.

Asked dh as he is a mechanic. He said the cords of the tyre are showing which means the tyre needs replacing beige eyou can drive on it. Call as/rac etc or a mobile tyrefitter

Riotingbananas · 03/01/2019 14:38

They've always been hubcaps to me too.

As the OP has explained it's a mark on the tyre, then I'd say drive to a local tyre fitters/garage and get them to look at it.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:38

WTF. There are no cords showing. The mark is DIRT.

Potatoscone have a brew and chill out

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 03/01/2019 14:45

I would get it looked at any way, even if it's only the trim that looks damaged on the wheel depending on how hard you hit the kerb you could have bent a wishbone or damaged a ball joint etc, depends on how hard you smacked it really. I've hit a pothole and damaged suspension before.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:45

I've got one thanks.

FrostyMoanyWind · 03/01/2019 15:04

Ok. So I carefully drove to the garage...to find out that despite google they were closed.

Found another in the neighbouring town and went there. He said it was ok, just the hubcap pushed in. He pulled it back out, (I'd tried and hadn't shifted it) said it's not damaged and sent me on my way. Said if we notice any unevenness when driving at high speed to get it checked again but he really doesn't think it's damaged at all. Phew.

I see you've got it sorted now and I'm late to the party but seriously, how many posters would actually change a tyre by the side of the road?

Apart from the fact that my car doesn't have a spare there's no way in the world I'd be doing that, and you were all wrong anyway

Beware of trusting the internet for advice people

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 15:27

Thanks for the update OP.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 15:31

but seriously, how many posters would actually change a tyre by the side of the road?

For me it's road dependent. Motorway? No. Dual carriageway lay-by? Yes. Country road just round a bend? No. Built up area with good visibility? Yes.

It's all about making the judgement. Sometimes it's safer to call your breakdown cover, sometimes it's reasonable to DIY.

Apart from the fact that my car doesn't have a spare

A lot of cars don't come with spares now. I always buy and carry a spare. Personal choice I suppose.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 03/01/2019 15:41

Would do... and have done! Can’t with current car as doesn’t have a spare.

But then I’d lose the boot space which was the main reason we bought the car! New version (which we hope to get soon) has been re designed to have space for a spare “under” the boot liner like my old car had....

This one would if the location was safe. And this one has done so. In fact ... this poster once went out to change her DH's wheel when he wanted to call out a rescue service having got a puncture on a quiet residential street! Grin

FrostyMoanyWind · 03/01/2019 16:40

How many posters would actually change a wheel at the side of the road

I wouldn't because I know that I can't! DH taught me how to change one and even my jumping on the wrench wouldn't shift the lug nuts. No way would I even attempt it, especially with DC with me.

OP posts:
Hezz · 03/01/2019 17:17

Surely most people can charge a tyre? It's pretty basic

Hezz · 03/01/2019 17:18

Sorry OP if that sounds sarky, if the nuts won't come loose it's v difficult

VictoriaBun · 03/01/2019 17:21

Just shown my oh and asked if he would drive the car. Answer - no it's had it .

brokenhead · 03/01/2019 17:23

No mustn't drive that

That needs a repair to alloy as well as a new tyre or the wheel can blow on it in the future which could be fatal xx how scary you poor thing

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 17:26

Jesus Christ even after it's been resolved 🤦🏻‍♀️

OP, cancel the cheque Grin

Rafita · 03/01/2019 17:29

Just showed my DH who's been a mechanic for 87 years and my DF who's head of the International Mechanics Association and they both said you're fucked. Said the car will likely explode if you even open the driver door. Could affect anyone within a 17-mile radius and leave the entire area a wasteland.

Their advice: call the AA.

I'm pretty sure they can't Hezz, there are people who can't even top up oil and sceenwash.

I'd be prepared to bet that not many people are confident enough to change a wheel by the side of the road and I'd be very surprised if anyone with a small child in the car would attempt it.

LBOCS2 · 03/01/2019 18:10

Why on earth wouldn't they change a tyre? Or with a small child?

I have changed tyres before on the side of the road. Last year when I got a puncture I would have given my left arm to have a spare so I could change it myself rather than being cooped up in the car with my 2 under 5 waiting for the RAC to pitch up at some point in the next 4 hours. As long as I was in a safe place I would just get on with it - with or without my children.
