Bashed a high kerb. Can't call DH, he's at work. Think the hubcap is pushed in rather than the tyre coming off?

Is it safe to drive? Do I need to take to garage?

OP posts:
ILoveMaxiBondi · 03/01/2019 14:13

It’s always been hub cap in my part of the U.K.

Rafita · 03/01/2019 14:15

Yeah I was seeing a split in the tyre at first. If it's just dirt, then I can't see what the problem is. A little bit of damage to the hub cap? I've seen far far worse!

Rafita · 03/01/2019 14:17

Why is everyone calling them hubcaps????? They are wheel trims!

Given that literally everyone else on the thread has called it a hub cap and nobody but you has called it a wheel trim, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that the former is the prevailing term in the UK.

eurochick · 03/01/2019 14:17

It's always been hubcabs in my part of the U.K. too (south east).

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:19

If you do take the odd advice to have your perfectly fine tyre seen by a garage, make sure it's not Kwik fit or the like, they will see you coming and tell you you need a new tyre for sure.

Honestly a scrape of dirt and a dented hub cap needs nothing further than the wheel tracking and alignment done, even that's not an ASAP situation.

Whatthefunk · 03/01/2019 14:19

that's a compression burst. Do not drive on it

Fairylea · 03/01/2019 14:21

Hubcap here (Norfolk).

Don’t drive on it. The wheel looks damaged.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:22

OP has already said there is no damage? Why is everyone saying it's damaged? It's a dirt scrape!

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:23

that's a compression burst

What's a compression burst?

Whatthefunk · 03/01/2019 14:25

Tbe tyre has been squeezed and burst

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:25

The tyre is not burst?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 03/01/2019 14:26

Unless you're not in the UK then I apologise

Of course they’re called hub caps in the U.K.!

Not the point of the post of course.... I’m back off to have a look at OPs photo now....

Whatthefunk · 03/01/2019 14:26

That doesn't look like a dirt mark. It looks like the tyre is split

Rafita · 03/01/2019 14:27

OP clearly states that the mark on the tyre is just dirt (nice optical illusion btw). Which only begs the question, what are you actually worrying about OP? That you shouldn't drive because the tyre is dirty? Or because the hub cap is scratched/dented a bit??

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:28

That doesn't look like a dirt mark. It looks like the tyre is split

Indeed. Which is why the question has been asked and answered already.

OP, who is with the car, has clarified there is NO split. NO damage.

LIZS · 03/01/2019 14:28

If the wall of tyre is split it is dangerous to drive. Call AA/RAC/Home mechanic to change tyre to spare if you have one then see if it can be repaired or needs replacing.

Whatthefunk · 03/01/2019 14:29

Optical illusion indeed....Wink

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:30

OMG can people really not read Confused

Whatthefunk · 03/01/2019 14:30

Ok thanks for clarifying

Rafita · 03/01/2019 14:30

Optical illusion indeed....wink

I don't get it.

Whatthefunk · 03/01/2019 14:32

Stressy much...

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 03/01/2019 14:33

Okay... looking at the picture it LOOKS like a damaged tyre but OP says it’s just dirt and OP is in the best position to make that decision.

Also, to me it looks an alloy wheel in which case the tyre may go down if the wheel is dented enough.

IF OP has a spare (not all cars come with.... mine doesn’t) I would change it and go to REPUTABLE tyre place NEVER KWIK FIT and get it checked.

Definitely check the tyre pressure and keep an eye on it at the very minimum.... in my opinion.

LIZS · 03/01/2019 14:35

Ok , posts crossed point made. Hmm Even if not visibly split a hard knock could have weakened the tyre and it may be damaged beneath the bent rim.

Wallywobbles · 03/01/2019 14:35

DH says no and that the edge of the tyre has come away from the metal interior. Put on you spare and take it to a tyre place.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:35

It's not an alloy. You can see the steel wheel underneath.
