Fuck! What have I done to my car?

Bashed a high kerb. Can't call DH, he's at work. Think the hubcap is pushed in rather than the tyre coming off?

Is it safe to drive? Do I need to take to garage?

Are people seeing a gouge where is marked with dirt? I’m only seeing the sharp line of dirt where it’s hit the kerb. No gouge.

Indeed. We need OP to clarify.

That looks like an alloy rather than a hubcap

It's not an alloy. You can clearly see the steel wheel behind the hub cap

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 13:43

Call the AA

Make sure you actually need them first OP.

Longdistance · 03/01/2019 13:44

The tyre looks damaged. Take it to a garage to get it looked at ASAP.

BaronessBomburst · 03/01/2019 13:48

@potatoscone
No problems at all with you correcting my post. I am no mechanic and it was based on information the garage gave to me when I came out from a nightshift to find my tyre badly damaged by a firework.

But 'lol'? Really, 'lol'?
That is beyond rude.

SoupDragon · 03/01/2019 13:49

I think it's an alloy wheel not a hubcap and you've dented it. The tyre looks scuffed rather than badly damaged in the photo but it probably will go flat with that dent in the wheel. I did this to one of my wheels o a pothole once.

FrostyMoanyWind · 03/01/2019 13:49

It's dirt, there's no scratch/hole in the tyre. It's more this rim(?) of the tyre. Can I drive to garage?

Is it?

Sorry.

Take the hub cap off.

You don't need a garage if there is no damage

Not an alloy. You can see the stele rim behind it.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 03/01/2019 13:52

Take the hub cap off and give the tyre a wash so you can see it properly and check for damage.

givenupcaring · 03/01/2019 13:53

Damaged tyre wall.

You cannot drive the car at all. You need to change to spare tyre.

brizzledrizzle · 03/01/2019 13:54

I wouldn't drive that either, it does look like the tyre is damaged.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 13:54

Damaged tyre wall.

OP has already said it's not damaged. The mark is a dirt scrape

ILoveMaxiBondi · 03/01/2019 13:54

From The Mark it looks like youve hit the kerb with the tyre, the tyre has creased causing the line of dirt that looks like a gouge, and the kerb hit the rim of the hub cap.

SleepWarrior · 03/01/2019 13:55

I'm not sure you'd be able to damage an alloy to that extent with just a scrape along a kerb would you? It's the kind of thing that happens with cheap hubcaps all too easily though - really hoping that's all it is!

If it's a hubcap, get it off and reassess.

Hissy · 03/01/2019 13:55

get a tyre place to check the tyres, but that is a scratch to the hub cap only, there are no alloys

MattFreisCheekyDimples · 03/01/2019 13:55

I think it would be safe to drive to a garage, provided it's fairly local. Get them to check the tyre and replace if necessary. You'll also need to book it in in the next week or so for the wheel tracking to be checked. If you bashed it pretty hard and the tracking has gone out of line, the tyres will wear unevenly.

BaronessBomburst · 03/01/2019 13:57

@potatoscone I'll make us a cuppa. Brew Cake

pjllama · 03/01/2019 14:00

Drive very slowly and carefully to the garage!

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:04

Drive very slowly and carefully to the garage!

Why?

If it's damaged, you don't drive it!

However it simply looks like the hubcap has been hit and pushed in slightly. Removing it will confirm if there is any damage to the actual wheel. It's unlikely though. Hubcaps are flimsy and break easily. It's not broken, the tyre isn't damaged.

Bekabeech · 03/01/2019 14:07

If you don't have breakdown cover - you can join at the road side (AA I think). Local to me there is also a tyre company which will come out to replace your tyres at the Roadside - so google to see if there is something similar where you are.

Squatternutbosh123 · 03/01/2019 14:08

Why is everyone calling them hubcaps????? They are wheel trims!

Unless you're not in the UK then I apologise

Banterlope · 03/01/2019 14:09

Take the plastic/alloy hub cap off and change the wheel if you have a spare and a jack. Then drive it to a garage and get them to look at it, you might need a new tyre. Maybe the tracking also needs checking – if you can get a spare on and it pulls to the left or right when driving, the wheel might need realignment or replacement.

potatoscone · 03/01/2019 14:10

You are allowed to say hub cap in the UK. It's fine.

Great idea joining a thread just to have a bitch about terminology though. Very helpful Hmm

Missingstreetlife · 03/01/2019 14:11

Change the wheel, that's what you have a spare for. Take it to tyre shop, they will examine and repair if poss
