Anyone changed their mindset about something? For me it’s skiing

I’m at a ski resort and I hate everything about it. Even all the other skiers irritate me. As soon as I get to the ski lift I’m effing and jeffing. I know this is psychological, and I have to change my mindset about it. Has anyone found a way to do this for skiing or some other activity?

I wouldn’t bother... if I don’t enjoy something I don’t do it!

Fightthebear · 03/01/2019 13:15

A vin chaud helps my skiing mindset no end.

Sitranced · 03/01/2019 13:15

Umm.. no, just don't do it. Its an activity you're allowed to choose not to do after all.

Is it not lovely swishing down a run?

Can you book a couple of private lessons while you’re there? It will give you more of a focus, improve your skiing and the instructor will be able to skip queues and get you away from lots of the other skiers. There are also many crimes against fashion at ski resorts so you can always play at spotting the worst outfit of the day or finding the couples with the matching ski gear. Failing that there’s always the vin chaud.

I find skiing either boring or terrifying

The thing with lessons is that I’ve spent a lot on them in previous years and although I can do a quiet gentle blue slope, it doesn’t affect my overall negative mindset to it. I think I want to enjoy it but as soon as I arrive I’m anxious

Are you ok if you stick to the gentle slopes? I like these, at my own pace but get scared if I’m with a group who want me to do more. Hope you can find a way to enjoy it

I've been twice to really lovely resorts but hated the whole thing. Early starts and pain and falling off the bloody lifts! And the expense!

Sorry I'm no help!

The problem you’re having is making skiing the focus of a ski holiday. For me the actual skiing is very secondary. Enjoy all the lovely things: mountains! Blue sky! Cheese! Crepes! Hot wine! Have a bit of a ski if you feel like it but make sure you plan it around all your lovely meals. Download a book and sit in the sun. Maybe have a spa morning. And don’t forget to keep looking at the view, i always think I can actually feel the good chemicals being released in my brain when I see a lovely snowy mountainscape. I bloody love a winter mountain holiday with a tiny bit of skiing Grin

I loathe skiing and my family love it, in fact we've got a time share in a ski resort Grin - I have been for a few years, it's a beautiful place with interesting things to do but I have finally said I am not going next year, my family will love it, they will have a great time & I just don't want to 'waste' the cost of the air fare (£1K+) plus other expenses and take time off work at this time of year.

I feel very empowered to have taken that decision and will really enjoy my time at home alone.

SoyDora · 03/01/2019 14:11

Do you have to go?

snowdropssoon · 03/01/2019 14:17

Another ex skier here.
I used to love skiing, first lift in the morning, no stopping for lunch, pushing myself to go faster or ski off piste.

A bad fall knocked my confidence so now I'm mostly petrified. I almost ski upright, fear the whoosh of snowboarders behind me and the sight of ice makes me panic.
If I could ski blues and snowy reds I'd be fine but the rest of my family get bored and impatient.
DH goes with the DC, they try and persuade me but I feel it's a total waste of money.

MuseumofInnocence · 03/01/2019 14:59

All the fucking queuing for everything!!

I'm currently at a ski resort.
Pretending I'm injured to avoid putting myself through any more pain.
I hate it!
But I like sitting in the sun reading my kindle.
Sorry, no help at all...
