Working at HMRC regional centres

I’ve been given an offer for a Compliance Caseworker in Leeds, EO grade.

I’m hesitant in accepting though. My current job is 3 miles away, takes 10 mins in the car. I would have to take the bus & train to HMRC, which will take about an hour. Plus it’s 2 more hours a week than my current role. Also, the offer mentions covering shifts 7 days a week.

I know contracts are often worded like this. But the main reason I wanted to join the civil service is for the flexible working, and possibility to work from home. They did mention these things in the interview.

My current role is boring and there is no opportunity to progress further. But it does offer flexibility and is so close to home...

Does anyone work at one of the regional centres and can advise what is expected, especially in terms of the working hours?

I can't speak for HMRC but i used to be an AO in another civil service department and an EO is a mobile grade so they'll expect you to be flexible.

Ring the person in charge of the recruitment to discuss. Working from home will depend on your job role if that's possible. Can you work less hours than full time? What is it you actually want - identify and then discuss.

It depends on what you'll actually be doing. Most of the work will be business hours M-F but I'm guessing some projects would require evening and weekend working but I don't think this would be usual and you would get other scheduled days off or TOIL or overtime if it's additional hours.

I'd call the jobholder and ask for further clarification of what will be required.
