Anyone work in banking? What time is ‘close of business’

Rather upsettingly I checked my online banking yesterday to find some scumbags had spent money on my card to the tune of £330. One payment had gone out a few days ago and two payments were showing as pending.
The building society were fantastic and immediately cancelled the card and refunded me one payment (the one that went out a few days ago) but explained that as the other two payments were pending they would have to wait until the payments left and the refunds would go in by close of business once they’ve left.
I’ve just checked my online banking and the two payments have left but the refunds have not gone in.
Anyone know how long this could be? When is ‘close of business’ today?
Also, how could this have happened? My card never leaves my purse and although I often shop online how do people get the 3 digits on the back? I’m upset and now afraid it can happen again. Is there any way of preventing this happening?

Close of business is 5pm; but refunds wouldn't usually be processed until the end of the day which is usually between 11pm and 2am depending on the bank and what processes are due to run tonight.

When you say never leaves your purse, do you mean you only use it online? A website you have purchased from may have been compromised, although no retailer should be retaining the full 16 digit number and certainly not the 3 digit security code. Or there may be a virus on your computer or phone which has logged your key pattern

If you do use it for physical purchases and cash withdrawals then it may have been cloned using tampered equipment

Yes, I suppose I was incorrect in saying it doesn’t leave my purse. I do use it for physical payments and cash withdrawals but it’s never left laying around or given to be taken away for a payment to be made. It’s sickening, it’s left me feeling quite vulnerable and I don’t trust myself to shop online now.
