Who the hell is Dave?

At Christmas and New Year, for the last 4/5 years I get best wishes text messages from Dave. I don't know who he is. I could ask him I suppose, but I quite like the mystery. I was very drunk last night and almost texted him back. Glad I didn't!

We also get Christmas cards from Pam and Vic for the previous owners of the house from 10 years ago. We always open them and display them and have a little toast to them on Christmas day.

Any similar stories?

DP once got a happy new year text, full of religious ramblings, from Gary (it said 'Gary' at the end). But it wasn't from the one and only Gary in DP's contacts - and even if he'd changed his mobile number, we couldn't imagine that he'd suddenly 'found God' Confused

I get a Christmas card from my next door neighbour addressed to Karen - I aren't called Karen but the previous owner of the house was.

I've lived here for 4 years.

This year I had 2 cards - one to 'Karen' and a second one using my first/real name, apologising for the first card.

The former occupants of our house get a Christmas card every year from Margaret. We’ve lived her for 21 years! Xmas Grin

fireworksscarethedogs · 01/01/2019 13:17

I get a Christmas card every year that is blank. They write merry Christmas and that's it, no name.

SantaBabycharly · 01/01/2019 13:20

No idea OP. I am still Spartacus.

CatAnnoyance · 01/01/2019 13:20

Our bonkers neighbour across the road sent us a Christmas card last year that said 'Hope you have a lovely first Christmas in your new home'. It was our fourth Christmas here Hmm

tinydancer88 · 01/01/2019 13:21

Between about 2014 and 2016 I used to get dramatic outpourings of love on Valentine's Day from a very forlorn man called Ian. On about the third year I did text him back to say it was the wrong number but I do sort of miss them now.

ilostitoverthiz · 01/01/2019 13:22

I get a lovely card from Pam and Ken to the previous owners and we have lived here for 10 years. I would think they would've stopped sending them now seeing as though I doubt they've had a reply or a thank you for the cards they've been sending

UselessTrees · 01/01/2019 13:27

This has just made me realise that this year we didn't get a Christmas card written in spidery handwriting for the former occupants. We've been here ten years and now I feel a bit sad.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 01/01/2019 15:45

These are great.

useless I do hope the owner if the handwriting just got the new address.

I had a happy new year from old clients of mine. I haven't seen them for years. I've changed my number since I last saw them but I believe you can still whatsapp people. I can only assume they were thinking of a different donajimena but its bizarre all the same because I haven't had a happy new year in all the years since I saw them.

I've somehow become included in a random prayer chain group from the states.
As a confirmed atheist I find them annoying but well meaning.
Every couple of weeks I'm asked to think of Jess, billy and bobby or whoever and given lists of reasons to pray for them. They also send invites and sometimes grim news. I've messaged repeatedly and very politely to let them know but still they come!

ScrambledSmegs · 01/01/2019 16:44

Years ago I used to get included in family email chains. Lovely updates about marriages and births, long group messages about family meet-ups in various states, family photos and what the colour scheme/theme was this year. Only problem was it wasn't my family and I'm in the UK, not US.

I kept politely asking them to take me off the list and find out the real Ann Smith's* email address. Occasionally there would be a snippy comment about my rudeness but as far as I know they never sorted out the issue. I set them to go to junk eventually, I did try.

ScrambledSmegs · 01/01/2019 16:45
  • Not my real name.

I got an email to my works email from a lawyer at a local council that just said - whats he like!!

I had a colleague who always used to send Christmas cards and sign leaving/retirement cards from “Ted, Vera and the Kids”. He was not called Ted!

As a child, my parents always used to get a card from the Republic of Ireland from “Enid and Hugh”. No idea who they were, but the cards were properly addressed and they knew all my siblings (4 of us, 1 with a pretty unusual first name). Then one year just Enid.Sad. Then we moved house....

PissOffPeppa · 01/01/2019 17:06

Maybe it’s like one of those Janet and Roy round robins, or whatever they’re called. It’s the kind of trick I’d play on my brother just so he’d tie himself in knots trying to work out who Dave is.

EvaHarknessRose · 01/01/2019 17:08

A plumber you used once.

CookPassBabtridge · 01/01/2019 17:12

The previous owner of our house died and we still get cards from her distant friends, no return address.. Some are just signed, but a few have a few paragraphs of yearly news. I feel sad I can't let them all know, and seems she didn't know anyone locally who also knew who her distant friends were. We display them with ours!

RaspberryRipple1963 · 01/01/2019 17:19

2 years ago on NYE,I had a text from an unknown number asking me if they 'could land their helicopter in my bedroom'. Confused. I text back asking who they were, saying I think they had the wrong number, and they just responded by sending me the exact same text again. Six times. Grin Never did find out who it was.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 01/01/2019 17:21

Jacqui !!!! I know 2 people called Jacqui. ...except one is spelt Jackie and wouldn't send me a card anyway. The 2nd is a Jacqui, but with a family, and I received their card.....absolutely no idea who this random woman is !!!

CaptainCallisto · 01/01/2019 17:23

My parents have lived in their house for 32 years. They still get a Christmas card every year, addressed to the previous owners, from Angela and Frank with a nice update about how their various children/grandchildren are getting on. I think mum quite enjoys the annual newsletter Grin

We get a card every Christmas from Jill and Geoff for a couple who must have moved out of this house in the 90s. We've been here twelve years and the people before us were here for ten. Our neighbours don't remember the people it's addressed to and they've been here donkeys' years. We always look forward to it and it doesn't feel like it's properly Christmas until it's arrived - always by Scout Post and always with a hopeful little note about catching up soon but no contact details. It's gained cult status amongst our friends now and some of them are seriously over-invested in asking whether it's arrived yet :)
