First period after childbirth

I’m 12 weeks post partum and just had my first period. All seemed normal, just a little heavier than I’m used to. However I thought it had all stopped but after a day of no bleeding I had a sudden gush of red blood. Not heaps of it but I’ve never experienced it doing that. Is this normal?

Are you Breastfeeding? That makes your uterus contract and made me bleed a little heavier when I fed during my period.

I am breastfeeding yes and also just started on the mini pill a couple of weeks ago. That might explain why it’s a bit heavier but maybe not the sudden gush after it stopped. Thank you.

I'm 14 weeks postpartum, and last week had half a day of light bleeding.... and that was it. I'm assuming it was my first period?! Also breastfeeding, so was expecting either a longer break, or more crampiness, but I guess I should be happy with my tiny pain-free bleed...!

I'd imagine yours was more normal for a returning period.

Were you wearing tight trousers when you got your random gush? I had similar with my bleeding after the birth. It had dwindled to almost nothing, then I shoehorned myself into some tight jeans and that day I had full on red bleeding again.

No tight trousers. I was still in my loose pyjama bottoms. I did experience the stop start bleeding after the birth though. Sometimes I’d have a couple of days of no bleeding and then it would come back. It was very odd.

I have had that with periods well before I ever got pregnant. Not sure what causes it.

Mine seemed lighter than usual but I am not breastfeeding, plus already on the pill.

Perhaps it is perfectly normal then. I was assuming it’s due to my periods settling after giving birth but maybe it’s common anyway.
