It's that time of year again - Tax return tears

Why, why why why. Every year i SWEAR i will have it done by April. This year i got as far as filling nearly the whole damn form in by June. The only thing left - reporting my capital gains - but can i find where on the bloody form i'm supposed to report this? NO, and none of the sodding how to guides say how to either. They say you have to report them - even if you have used the real time to pay it, but not WHERE, and i need to use a relief too.

Can't get through to an HMRC advisor either, and i'm loathe to add accountants fees when the bulk of it is done and dusted. Anyone around to help?

Anyone else already regretting their choice to delay submitting, or worse any smug bastards who did their return in April?

I’m with you! Told myself I’d sit down and get it done the first day of my Christmas break, three hours later I couldn’t work out how to find out what mileage expenses I’ve had from work so gave up....now saving it to the last day of my Christmas break. Hideous task every year, already dreading the next one!

(Also - can’t help on the capital gains I’m afraid, but will have that to do next year so interested to know the answer!)

Are you using the HMRC software? At the beginning of the return it should have asked you if you had any capital gains and you would need to tick yes to get the pages to appear

Oh well you've got further than me OP. Every year I fail at the first hurdle, which is logging in to the bloody website.

Its a separate set of pages. I dont use HMRC software so don't know where you tick or click to obtain the pages but it must be somewhere!

Try having 97 of the blasted things to do 🤣

Honestly, I think most of the difficulty comes from having to fight the awful HMRC software. Have a look at taxfiler.co.uk/non-agent/individual
It does cost £24 but makes the forms so much easier to deal with. (I'm not associated with them, they have saved me from a breakdown over tax return season though!)
