Look out for the meteor shower and the supermoon eclipse!
1st NASA space probe passes by Ultima Thune. Moon is near Venus 7am SSE.
2nd Venus and Jupiter are near the Moon 7am SSE
3rd Moon is near Jupiter 7am SE. Earth is at its closest to the Sun 520am.
3rd/4th Quadrantid meteor shower peak around midnight and after.
12th Moon near Mars in the evening West
17th Star Aldebaran near the Moon in Taurus 620pm SE .
21st Stunning super moon eclipse starting at 334am East .
22nd Venus close to Jupiter 7am SE . Moon near star Regulus in the evening East .
23rd Moon close to star Regulus in the evening in Leo East .
27th Moon near star Spica in the morning.
30th Moon near Venus and Jupiter and star Antares around 6am/7am SSE
31st Moon between Venus and Jupiter and near star Antares around 6am/7am between the SE and SSE .

Quadrantid Meteor Shower:-
Visible 1st to 10th January but peaking on the night of 3rd/4th January. Normally best seen from midnight onwards. This is supposed to be the most spectacular meteor shower of 2019. There is no moonlight to interfere but fingers crossed the sky is clear of cloud.
Supermoon eclipse:-
Night of the 20th/21st January there is an unusually large and bright supermoon as well as an eclipse. The eclipse begins at 334am and totality lasts from 441am to 543am.
Comet Wirtanen:-
At the beginning of the month you can see it with the naked eye, high in the northern sky in Ursa Major. After mid January you wlll need binoculars to spot it.
Planets:-
Mars - Is the only prominent planet in the evening sky this month. It can be seen in Pisces in the West.
Neptune - is in the evening sky in Aquarius.
Uranus - is in the evening sky to the upper left of Mars in Pisces in the West setting around 130am.
Venus - Rises about 430am from Libya through Scorpius to Ophiuchus. Early January sees the best appearance of Venus in the morning.
Jupiter - Beginning of January rises at 6am to the lower left of Venus in Ophiuchus near the star Antares, the main star of Scorpius.
As the month progresses, Venus and Jupiter move closer together
Saturn - At the end of the month Saturn rising at 7am in the dawn twilight to the lower left of Venus and Jupiter.
Mercury - too close to the Sun to be visible in January
Constellations:-
Orion - is spectacular. is in the southern part of the sky.
Ursa Major - seen in the north east
Ursa Minor - North, below the Pole Star
