Why do they have to keep their hands at the level of their eyes?? It’s never explained is it?

The Phantom/Erik tends to kill his victims with the Punjab lasso so if they keep their hands at the level of their eyes the rope will loop around their arm and neck, or just arm and not round their neck.

To prevent the Punjab lasso going around their neck!
