My amazing, beloved grandfather is 102. He has been completely independent up until 6 months ago, when old age finally seems to have caught up and he is needing ever increasing help on a daily basis. My parents do lots for him and he has carers from a local agency twice daily for an hour. This is costing a lot of money, and he does not have lots of available cash. He had an OT assessment and she recommended he applies for attendance allowance. This he been completed but I have no idea how long the process takes. He could do with more than 2 visits a day but he can't really afford this for long without a bit of help. I just want him to be ok as his life comes to an end, and for the pressure on my parents to be reduced. I live 2.5 hours away and offer as much help and support as I can but can't realistically help on a day to day basis. He is fiercely independent and wants to stay at home. He had some respite care a couple of months ago whilst my parents had a few days away. It cost nearly £3000 and he stayed in bed the whole time despite the best efforts of the staff, so I think care at home is the way to go.
