Films that have aged well and films that haven't

Film that HAS aged well - the Truman show. Still so relevant and could be made today

Film that hasn't aged well - Sixteen Candles. Watched it recently as I loved it as a teen. Full of racism, alluding to raping a young woman, sexual harassment and deeply sexist.

Flash Gordon has aged well 😂😂!

AhoyAhoy · 31/12/2018 23:25

Toy Story is over 20 years old and looks great. I love that Sid wears jeans and converse, and looks absolutely timeless.

PawneeParksDept · 31/12/2018 23:57

It's not just the Biff scene in BTTF though as @Popfan it's the swearing, and a couple of instances of really off colour racism

PawneeParksDept · 31/12/2018 23:57

As Popfan said that should say

ButteryParsnips · 01/01/2019 00:13

Ryan Phillippe was married to Reese Witherspoon, and had two kids with her before IIRC he had an affair with another actress called Abbie Cornish and the marriage broke up. Think all of that overshadowed his acting career, as did Reese's taking off.

Friends has aged very badly too. I used to howl laughing at it now I cringe. Especially when Ross got jealous because Tachel got a new job, Chandler always being made fun of because he's "gay" (and gets offended at the suggestion Hmm) and Joey's disgusting sexism and poor treatment of women. I remember in the episode where Phoebe give birth, Chandler and Monica are just secret FWBs and she considers dating a male nurse she meets. Chandler makes fun of him for having a "girls job" 🙄 and rather than telling him to STFU the male nurse explains "well I'm actually training to be a doctor" - oh good, wouldn't want him doing a demeaning girly job forever Angry I used to watch re runs in the background when doing stuff now I can't bear it

And YES at Peter Pan being a twat. He's awful to Wendy, and I couldn't believe the racism. Hope the little bastard gets throttles to death by his shadow!

Ace Ventura! Used to live this film as a teen, watched it a few weeks ago and it's massively homophobic/antitrans.

He kisses the character that used to be a man but is now a woman and there's a 'hilarious' montage of Ace making himself sick, burning his clothes and crying in the shower!

And the police academy movies, they manage to offend on every front, sexist, homophobic, fat shaming and the racist language really made it an uncomfortable watch!

HopeAndJoy16 · 01/01/2019 01:35

I agree with Friends and Bridget Jones aging badly!

I also think Mrs Doubtfire has aged reeeally badly. And it's just a super creepy idea, basically stalking your ex with your kids in on the idea Hmm

Sex and the City- both TV and films- seem really dated now. I loved the Carrie and Big love story when i watched it first time round, i was quite disappointed rewatching it.

Hulloa · 01/01/2019 01:35

I think some people need to take the stick out of their ass. People thirty years ago expressed themselves differently shock horror. In thirty years' time your grandchildren will be amazed that you let their parents watch things that they consider to be unacceptable. Or maybe they'll have perspective? Who knows.

As for seven brides, it was always meant to be total nonsense, at one point they're actually reading about rape of the sabine women which is kind of meta really, and I doubt very much that the idea was to subliminally indoctrinate the poor unenlightened audiences into the merits of kidnap.

Notmyrealname85 · 01/01/2019 01:35

Friends is awfu really, a shame as it’s set in NY and you’d think they’d have been less bigoted (maybe?!)

Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Munroe doing great comedy - made in the 50s maybe, and still great. Stylish and frothy fun! I don’t think any bigotry, and the last line is great :)

franke · 01/01/2019 01:40

Yes, Big is seriously weird.

I watched A Fish Called Wanda recently thinking it was going to be toe curling but actually laughed out loud a lot. Probably more than when I first watched it years ago.

brizzledrizzle · 01/01/2019 01:40

Ab Fab hasn't aged at all well.

Blondie1993 · 01/01/2019 01:43

Jurassic Park seems to have aged well! We watched Jurassic World last night and Jurassic Park tonight and the original is definitely better. Made DS jump a few times Grin!

leccybill · 01/01/2019 01:53

Watched the Mr Bean movie with my class just before Christmas, they loved it. It looked very old fashioned to me but clearly the visual comedy still appeals.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 02:50

"used to howl laughing at it now I cringe. "

Oh dear.

"Especially when Ross got jealous because Tachel got a new job,"

The joke's on Ross in that story. He loses Rachel because of it. The programme doesn't condone his behaviour.

" Chandler always being made fun of because he's "gay" (and gets offended at the suggestion hmm)"

Chandler doesn't like people thinking he's gay because it hurts his prospects with women. Pretty understandable for a single man who has trouble finding a girlfriend.

" and Joey's disgusting sexism and poor treatment of women. "

Joey is promiscuous, but only with consenting women. He doesn't do anything the woman doesn't want.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 02:50

"Ab Fab hasn't aged at all well."

Are you going to elaborate on that?

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 01/01/2019 10:24

I agree about friends being dated actually. Used to love it, but yes, there are a lot of cringey comments now. Especially regarding homosexuality. Gwen, I get what you're saying about hurting Chandler's prospects with women, but it goes much further than that. In one episode Monica finds out that Chandler kissed a guy, thinking it was a girl and Chandler tries to dig for 'dirt' on Ross, but Ross just keeps saying "whatever dude, you kissed as guy" Monica laughs hysterically each time it's mentioned. Also the early ones with Ross's ex wife, Joey says something along the lines of "weirder than seeing your two mom's kiss?!" I don't remember the exact context, but tbf, you don't really need any to know that was blatant homophobia.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/01/2019 10:27

"Ross just keeps saying "whatever dude, you kissed as guy""

Well Chandler identifies as straight but kissed a man by accident. It's obvious that his friends would laugh at that and it's all part of the idea that it would damage his prospects with women - considering he had little success with women before Monica.

""weirder than seeing your two mom's kiss?!""

Well, it was very new at the time and quite unusual.

GallicosCats · 01/01/2019 10:36

Dead Poets Society has aged really badly. The snippets of casual misogyny here and there are bad enough, but as an adult I think the teacher's actions are unprofessional, he doesn't so much challenge boundaries as shred them to pieces and there are far better ways of dealing with bullying parents than forcing a vulnerable kid into a confrontation that they will never win.

Butterfly005 · 01/01/2019 10:39

"I'm surprised at people mentioning Back To the Future. Isn't that part of the film, Biff as a character is a pervy, misogynistic pig and all the good characters thought so. In terms of the racism that was used as a reflection on the 1950s from a 1980s POV i. E. It was included to show how much the modern 80s audience had changed, it was a reflection of the 1950."

I agree! Yes those scenes seemed awful but that's cos it was a bad character doing them! In films these days you still get people assaulting women and using offensive language - of course it's wrong in real life, but the audience appreciates it's not real life, it's a film and the character is a pig!

Same with Friends, I wouldn't say there was anything nasty in that - all harmless jokes that maybe aren't totally PC but none of the characters seemed overly offended.

purpleme12 · 01/01/2019 10:43

Nooooo Friends is still ace. But it was made in a different time really. Lesbian mums were still fairly new then - well compared to now anyway. I think you do have to think of when these programmes were made

ErrolTheDragon · 01/01/2019 10:46

harmless jokes that maybe aren't totally PC but none of the characters seemed overly offended.

Many series from a couple of decades ago or so have elements which don't sit well now but which at the time would have passed unnoticed.

E.g. If you compare eg Endeavor with Morse, Morse apparently got a lot more sexist (and maybe unconsciously racist) as he got older - because of the difference in when these series were made.

purpleme12 · 01/01/2019 10:47

Oh my god to pp who mentioned Cruel Intentions I loved that. Must watch it again!

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 01/01/2019 10:59

Gwen, it doesn't matter though. The point is, it hasn't aged well because it isn't new or unusual anymore. They're still homophobic comments, regardless.
