Films that have aged well and films that haven't

Film that HAS aged well - the Truman show. Still so relevant and could be made today

Film that hasn't aged well - Sixteen Candles. Watched it recently as I loved it as a teen. Full of racism, alluding to raping a young woman, sexual harassment and deeply sexist.

DC have enjoyed home alone and so did I this Christmas.
Didn’t watch Shawshank redemption until it had been out 10+ years and thought it was great.
Don’t think I’d want my —non-exultant— pre-teen daughter to see Grease though.

cheminotte · 31/12/2018 20:15

Aargh - non- existent!

PawneeParksDept · 31/12/2018 20:38

@cheminotte

I saw Pretty Woman, Grease and Dirty Dancing as a preteen and all went over my head!

ErrolTheDragon · 31/12/2018 20:41

what dates it are the computers the tech people are using.

Silicon Graphics. Lovely, they were.

Sarahandduck18 · 31/12/2018 20:43

War Games is very dated now.

It’s the internet before the internet!

Florries · 31/12/2018 20:50

A film that has not aged well is The Little Mermaid. Do not give your voice up for a man.

PawneeParksDept · 31/12/2018 20:53

Both Waillams and Lucas have admitted they are embarrassed by/ regretful of some of the content in Little Britain now

HelmutFrontbut · 31/12/2018 20:56

Minority Report, that film was way ahead of its time 😉

Anyone remember eXistenZ? Made nearly 20 years ago but ...

Santaclarita · 31/12/2018 21:03

Titanic.

That film was made in 1995 I believe or 97 and yet the special effects are still better than some films made this year.

DeadZed · 31/12/2018 21:08

The thing I never understood about Frasier was all the stick Roz got but she was only doing exactly the same thing as Frasier. It irritates me at the time and it still irritates me even though I love watching reruns.

weegiemum · 31/12/2018 21:10

I'm always amazed at how poorly sci-fi films predicted mobile phones. That we'd all be instantly contactable and carrying the internet in our pockets is just not there.

I still think that films like Blade Runner (+sequel)and Minority Report got a lot right though - just not communications technology.

catlass · 31/12/2018 21:12

I'm surprised at people mentioning Back To the Future. Isn't that part of the film, Biff as a character is a pervy, misogynistic pig and all the good characters thought so. In terms of the racism that was used as a reflection on the 1950s from a 1980s POV i. E. It was included to show how much the modern 80s audience had changed, it was a reflection of the 1950. Admittedly its been a while since I watched it tho!

It remind me of the Hairspray film, where the N word was used for black characters. It was being used as a reflection of those time and how horrible we see that "today". I dont know if I'm making sense 😂😂.

Funnily enough we watched Home Alone recently and thought it had aged badly 😂😂

Elzbells · 31/12/2018 21:23

I made my kids watch Short Circuit last week, so old fashioned now but I loved it at the time.

Gwenhwyfar · 31/12/2018 21:24

"The thing I never understood about Frasier was all the stick Roz got but she was only doing exactly the same thing as Frasier."

I don't remember Frasier being promiscuous. Lots of short relationships, yes, but not one-night-stands.

LightDrizzle · 31/12/2018 21:27

I started watching Pretty Woman a few months ago after a gap of many years and found it grubby and really not very nice. I wasn’t a child when I first watched it so I was surprised by the change on my response.

Marmite27 · 31/12/2018 21:27

We watched The Mighty Ducks with DNephew13 a few months back and were open mouthed at the ‘Oreo line’ line. (3 kids, 2 black with the white one in the middle)

Gwenhwyfar · 31/12/2018 21:27

"Recently saw an episode in which David Walliams character projectile vomits because an Asian woman cooked the food he was eating hmm"

The joke was on the racist woman there, not the Asian woman.
I thought it was unfair because the joke was that rural WI women were racist, didn't seem based on reality to me, but the joke itself is not racist if you see what I mean.
It's like in the fat fighters story, the joke is on the group leader, not the dieters (same with the job club one it was based on).
Similar thing with Alf Garnett.

Popfan · 31/12/2018 21:41

Back to the Future is one of my favourite childhood films. Put it on a few years ago to watch with DS (now 11). He must have been about 7/8? I was so shocked at the amount of swearing in it! We had to turn it off. I then remembered all the sex stuff in the car and the mum fancying the MJ Fox character. Can't believe it was classified as a PG! Still haven't put it back on for my DS. Grin Great film but def not a PG! They had funny ideas about age ratings back then!

Hellomatey001 · 31/12/2018 21:41

Short Circuit the film where the white guy browns up to play an Indian? Definitely not acceptable nowadays.

One that isnt controversial now but maybe in the future is Madagascar. I watched the meerkat King Julien and he had a strong South Asian accent. So I looked it up and Sacha baron Cohen (Ali G) did the voice. He said it was a Sri Lankan accent and laughed about it being offensive. So was basically a white guy doing a stereotypical Asian accent for laughs. I wonder whether that will make people wince in the future.

BlancheM · 31/12/2018 21:44

I was watching Cruel Intentions the other night like 😬 thinking it hadn't aged well. Yes, I know it's based on Dangerous Liaisons, but still.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 31/12/2018 21:46

blanche I fucking LOVE Cruel Intentions. Ryan Philippe! Yes please! Where did he disappear to?!

I remember watching it with my husband and he’d never seen it and he was like wtf am I watching?!

BlancheM · 31/12/2018 21:47

He's beautiful isn't he IAm I wonder why he didn't do many more films

IJustLostTheGame · 31/12/2018 21:50

The king and I. It's just feels offensive now.
There are also the Japanese character scenes in breakfast at tiffanys. It's really uncomfortable viewing and I wish this film could be re edited

elibee · 31/12/2018 22:06

The reason that the cgi in jurassic park has aged so well is because most of it wasn't cgi!
They used some absolutely amazing animatronic dinosaurs.

I had a tape of peter pan that I used to adore when I was wee. Found a copy of it to show my boys a couple of years and got about ten minutes in before I realised what a sexist, racist creep he was.

Catlass I agree with you about Back to the Future.

Home Alone: I must be a violence prude as I was a bit shocked at the violence in the films.

I think Con Air is aging well. Haven't watched it for a while though Grin
