What's your ideal way to spend a birthday?

It's my birthday soon and, as per lots of recent threads, it sucks being this close to Christmas. Even dh has expressed reluctance at doing much due to having spent money over Christmas Hmm

It's a weekday and I've got it free - so what would your ideal day look like?

Anyone? Sad dh gets so stressed about celebrations as he just doesn't get them.

Bike ride to a cafe
Lunch at cafe
Ride home
Pizza, wine and film

Not sure what happens to the DC though!

MummyInHeel · 30/12/2018 20:02

A lovely long lunch somewhere with a view. A gentle stroll and a nice coffee. Enjoy your day.

I had a perfect birthday this year. Dh was away for the weekend so had arranged for MIL to have the children so I was child (and husband) free. I went round a museum and out for lunch with my mum and sisters, all back to mine to get showered, changed and relax for a bit then we went to a lovely restaurant for dinner and out for cocktails afterwards with friends. It was amazing!

Misty9 · 30/12/2018 21:41

Well I've booked afternoon tea for lunch so far - might take my friend rather than dh though Grin

I'll need to be out of the house otherwise I'll just do chores.

Last time I was single: took myself out to a lovely pub for a steak lunch, then came home and read all afternoon.

Birthdays when I was with ex: dinner at my place of choosing, plus multiple trips and events to mark a -0 year.

This year single again: fuck all, went to work, came home, gym. Nobody had remembered. Felt awful Sad

On my last birthday I went to Bletchley Park for the day, then out for a meal & drinks with friends.

Brilliant day.

It's my Birthday Tomorrow and I was just going to Watch Gilmore girls with a bottle of Prosecco but might just go out for a browse around the sales in Bath now

Kemer2018 · 30/12/2018 22:08

Low key meal or coffee n cake with my nuclear family.
I went for an indian meal in a restaurant recommended by one of my new colleagues (went with new colleagues). It was good.

My last birthday before DS came along, nearly 4 years ago:

5 mile run with DH, started snowing half way round (early march). Wish I could run even 2 miles now!
Back home and made pancakes, piled up with chocolate spread, peanut butter, fruit etc.
Drive out into the countryside (naff all open in early march, everywhere looks bleak).
Jumped into bed with DH for a bit of afternoon nookie with glass of red.
Went out for pizza and drinks in the evening.

It was a simple day spent doing things we liked. I was pregnant before the month was out so glad we did!

Hope you have a lovely birthday doing just what you want to do OP.

It was my birthday two days ago. Had a lovely beach walk with DH and close friends, followed by food cooked at home by DH for everyone in the evening. Perfect!

skyfullofstars · 31/12/2018 08:05

I had a spa day with my sister last year then went out for dinner with DH and family was lovely.

EmpressJewel · 31/12/2018 08:10

I normally go shopping at one of the big shopping centres, have a nice lunch, maybe a facial and then spend the rest of the time with the family.

Charles11 · 31/12/2018 08:28

On my last birthday, I went for a bike ride, met up with a friend for lunch, had a takeaway in the evening.

BikeRunSki · 31/12/2018 08:40

@Charles11 you had my ideal birthday!!

Lindy2 · 31/12/2018 08:42

Mine was on Chridtmas Eve. DH was working so I went for a nice walk along the river with my children followed by a McDonalds lunch. (DH and I had been for a posh birthday lunch a few days earlier).
Family came over in the afternoon as they were staying for Christmas. We all had a nice dinner together and I opened presents and cards whilst we all were together for dinner.
Christmas stuff then took over such as church, putting up stockings etc.
It was a nice day.
Afternoon tea sounds lovely.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 31/12/2018 08:47

Usually champagne breakfast somewhere with friends & then catnap. Posh Dinner & cocktails with dh & dcs (16 &20).

Vynolo · 31/12/2018 08:48

Both mine and Dh birthday is just before Christmas, we basically watched the movies of our choice and ate too much cheese. Grin

Smellybluecheese · 31/12/2018 08:52

It’s my birthday today. We are going for afternoon tea and then to see the lights at Blenheim Palace. Then after DD4 is in bed DH is cooking me a nice meal from my new Ottolenghi book and we’ll watch a film. Before DD we used to go away for new year (& my birthday) every year.

Misty9 · 31/12/2018 10:17

callmesir Flowers sorry your birthday was so sad. What could you do to make things better next year?

@uncomfortablydumb53 (great nn) happy birthday!! Hope you enjoy sale shopping Cake

And happy birthday to @smellybluecheese too Cake

Thanks for all the replies. It is hard at this time of year and even I have had my fill of eating and celebrating! Stupidly I even got married at Christmastime so our anniversary is just after Christmas too Blush

I do put a lot of store on my birthday being special; maybe I need to stop that. But it's the only day of the year that's legitimately my birthday!
