Babysitting a child with chicken pox and just found out I'm pregnant

Hi all,

I am looking after a young family member all day tomorrow and his mum has just texted me to say he's come out in the dreaded spots! I also just found out 3 days ago that I am pregnant, however, I have already had chicken pox as a child. Would babysitting still be a no-no? I would feel awful letting the family member down but of course my unborn baby would come first! Thanks in advance.

As long as you have had it before, and it was a reasonably good dose of it and you were older than one year old when you had it. Also that you are not currently immunosuppressed then you are immune.

Sorry incredibly bad grammar Blushposting in a hurry.

It's only a problem if you haven't had chicken pox. But chicken pox makes you feel ill, so the child would need their parents to look after them at home. I don't go out when my dcs are ill!

I'd check with the early pregnancy unit if you don't have a midwife yet. You can still get chicken pox even if you've already had it

Smashing thanks! I was 3 when I got it, and I have a lovely scar under my ear where I apparently pulled one of the spots off Grin. That also solves the problem of having to think of a believable excuse as to why I can't mind him too!

If you have had chicken pox already you will be fine.

I am currently pregnant and have never had the chickenpox yet throughout the pregnancy was exposed to two family members with shingles and one colleague 😬

When I went to the doctors about a vaccine they took my blood to confirm I was not immune from it and then did nothing anyway! They said they would give me a vaccine after the birth!

You are fine as you will already be immune.

Congratulations!!

Never mind, mum's just texted me again to say she's gonna cancel the event to stay at home with DC! Slightly relieved too. As I'm sure it's blindingly obvious Grin this is my first pregnancy and I can just tell already I'm going to be a nightmare and question everything I ever believed to be true!
