Early New Year’s Resolution kicking in, I guess. I waste far too much time checking Facebook and Instagram. Now they’re gone!

Good for you OP!

I've massively pared down my friends/followers and what groups/accounts I am following in an effort to remove the toxic elements and make it work for me.

Challenging myself to have 5 postivie interactions on social media a day and walk away from anything that doesn't add to my life.

If that doesnt work, I'll be joining you!

catsoup · 29/12/2018 20:42

I deleted Facebook a few months ago and don't miss it at all. I actually feel I'm not missing out at all although when I'm going on a potential date I use my friends Facebook to look the guy up Grin.

dudsville · 29/12/2018 20:42

Ah, now you can get on with your life!

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 29/12/2018 20:43

I can't bring myself to delete FB altogether because it is pretty useful at times, but I am pretty much weaned off posting on there and I can go days without checking it. It's very liberating.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 29/12/2018 20:44

I've also massively culled my friends list which has really helped make it less annoying.

JarlBalgruuf · 29/12/2018 20:51

I'm now celebrating over a year with no Facebook.

Yes it is good to keep in touch with people, but pretty much everything else about it all is horrible. You just end up wasting all your time reading about people you don't really care about and thinking that your life sucks compared to everyone else's.

I'm so much happier without it.

beela · 29/12/2018 20:53

I quit fb on Christmas day. I feel liberated (but I will keep it for messanger).

Now I just need to wean myself off mumsnet Xmas Grin

kimikoglenn · 29/12/2018 20:54

That's why I took a break of MN for a while Grin

OnlineAlienator · 29/12/2018 20:54

Came off fb a coupke of months ago and dont miss it at all - what a waste of life!

Upsy1981 · 29/12/2018 21:07

How do you keep in touch with people that you don't see often? E.g. I have a birth group on FB, we have 'known' each other for very many years now and have been through births, deaths, divorces, marriages, etc etc and I wouldn't want to lose that contact. They live all over the country, and in some cases, internationally. I would love to get rid of FB but that contact alone makes me not want to.

Upsy1981 · 29/12/2018 21:08

For those who have, do you find you are using your time better. I need some way of limiting my time on MN!

comeagainforbigfudge · 29/12/2018 21:17

I deactivated fb before xmas. Was worlimg my way through culling people then thought what a waste of time and deactivated it. Feels quite good not looking at it.

Still got insta but i unfollowed a host of annoying "celebs" and followed some crafty people. I am teying to cut phone use, so have been reading more and have started crocheting.

Its a work in progress getting rid of my phone. I use whats app to keep in touch with people.

Aiming to get phone time down to less than 2 hours a day. Its not going well Blush

Acopyofacopy · 29/12/2018 21:44

For now I have just deleted the app from my phone. I do use it to stay in touch with some people, but I can do that when I’m on a pc.
It’s the constant phone checking and loss of time that I want to get rid of.

I don’t need Instagram at all - why do I want to know what some random stranger takes pictures of, really?

I find Facebook is really bad for my mental health. I can't delete it as I use it to look up info for toddler classes etc that vary and get party invites sometimes but I don't bother checking it unless I really have to.

Never had Instagram tbh, don't see the point.

comeagainforbigfudge · 05/01/2019 14:29

How is everyone doing with this? I have kept off fb so far but i keep having moments of wondering whats happening on there but then i think about why i came off and give myself a mental kick.

Time spent on Instagram is reducing, mainly because i rarely see anything interesting. So now im using it as a look book for craft inspiration envy at how talented others are slow changes i guess

ZigZagZombie · 05/01/2019 14:34

I've taken it off my phone which as a result means I'm not idly scrolling. It's still on my desktop but I'm less likely to scroll there... but I still need to manage it better as I need it for work (own business) but it's too easy to get sucked in.

I gather there's a chrome extension will hide the blather but just allow you to go looking for what you want.

2019Reasons · 05/01/2019 14:34

I sacked off all social media last New Year and I no longer miss it or even think about it anymore. I actually find it all a bit bizarre with some distance from it. I can’t imagine wanting to ‘share’ anything in that way anymore.

AllGoodDogs · 05/01/2019 15:36

I did this on NYE. I have checked it on the website via my phone a few times as I had an email that I'd been tagged in something. It's tempting to use the browser but I'm trying to avoid it. I have been on MN, Reddit & candy crush more since, so I'm not sure what I'm accomplishing..

ladybirdsaredotty · 05/01/2019 15:58

I have deleted the fb app and haven't checked it since, although that was only 2 days ago! But I seem to be spending more time on here...
