Car problems - recovery option?

Hi - my car has a battery light come in, suggests it's the alternator in the book and says get battery looked at.

I'm away til Tuesday at least ... not many garages open and I live 3 hours drive away.

Do I call green flag today and see what's wrong today and hope they don't say we'll have to tow you home, but it'll be today or just leave it til the day we leave? Not sure if they say we'll tow you and then wait til our journey is finished?

Is the car working fine? Is the light orange or red?

What cover do you have with green flag? Tbh if the alternator needs replacing you might as well stay put and get it done.

It's a red light and the coolant light came
On too - I'd get it Done here but Monday is the only day the could do it due to holidays and I'd be stuck til at least Thursday or Friday if they can't do it then ... last time my clutch went it took about 3 days to get the part plus our garage to have time to do it as it wasn't booked in and they were busy with booked jobs

I once ignored the red battery light on my van....45 mins later on a moterway I lost all electrics - lights/power steering.

I've learnt my lesson - get these things Looked at asap.

Red light = bad. You are not going to drive it home. Either get car into a local garage ASAP, or wait until you come to leave and call breakdown. Double check your breakdown policy, make sure you have relay.

flumpybear · 29/12/2018 09:19

Yes have relay - not going to drive it as it'll fail en route a my query was should leave it to call the Green flag til the day I want to leave?

I think I will wait til I leave and call them that day

Id personally try and get it home or to garage provided you don't have any motorways or dark secluded lanes to drive down.

There's a decent chance it'll get there OK on a single trip (radio off, no heating etc) if it doesnt, your hardly in a worse place than you would have been - probably a 2 hour wait this time of year.

Could you not call around garages local to where you are to find someone to look at it? If it needs parts ordered you car won't be running by Monday probably but at least you'd know. Or get them to tow it to a garage where you live so they can look at it and call the garage there. Then get some other transport home on the day you want. At least the garage will have a couple of days to potentially fix your car before you need it.

Do not call until you are ready to leave. Bear in mind depending on any clauses they might not come out a second time to the same / or similar problem, This just happened to me, my car would not start and I had them out. Had the problem sorted at a garage and a few days later the same thing happened again. They would not come out as it could be related to the recent problem, they then agreed to if I paid £99.00. Just beware.
