Absolute idiot on way back from the pub genuinely only had a couple but was reading phone as I was walking- twisted ankle and down like a sack spuds :(
Ankle is so sore and tender really struggling to bear any weight on it- and Other foot all my toes are really painful struggling to put any weight on walk in them- which is great with 2 young dc a home 😢😮
Could a sprain be this painful - the tablets not doing much

sprains can be ridiculously painful. When I badly sprained my ankle it was more painful than when I broke the other one. I actually limped around on my broken ankle for four days whereas I couldn't bear to on my sprained one.

The only way to know is to get it checked unfortunately.

Hope you're on the mend soon.

Rest with your foot on a stool or similar. Apply an icepack (a bag of frozen peas would do). If it doesn't help, seek medical advice.

MIU will determine if it needs xray or not. Sprains and soft tissue damage can be worse to recover and more painful.

robrobinson · 28/12/2018 09:32

You need an xray and your doctors won't be able to do that. Go to local minor injuries or a and e.

LIZS · 28/12/2018 09:32

Gp will refer you anyway.

Sprains can be very painful.

When I had a badly broken leg I was in a non-weight bearing situation and cast for 8 weeks - when the cast was off I was limping for ages as it was extremely painful. I sprained my ankle back at the beginning of July this year, had it x-rayed... it wasn’t broken so I thought I’d got off lightly. I was wrong! it was almost as painful as the fracture. Six months later and I’m still finding it uncomfortable when walking.

I’d advise you to get it x-rayed.... good luck!

Check out the Ottawa Ankle Rules. www.pulsetoday.co.uk/clinical/toolbox-ottawa-knee-and-ankle-rules/20002175.article. If you can't weight bear and you have pain on at least one of various places you are likely to get an X-ray, and will certainly justify being seen by someone who knows what they are doing.

Whether the bone is fractured or not you've done soft tissue damage and decent strapping can really help with that. Go somewhere with xrays though. Minor injuries, Urgent Care that has X-ray or A&E and take a good book to while away the wait.

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 28/12/2018 09:40

Do get checked out. I walked on a broken ankle for a few days before googling those ottowa rules and realised it was probably broken - it was! I was given an air cast which helped enormously.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/12/2018 10:01

You MUST get it checked out properly NOW!

Soft tissue damage can be far more long lasting and detrimental than an ankle break. Trust me. I wracked mine playing volleyball, DM broke hers stepping off a step that wasn't there. 20 years later I still get issues, she's fine.

Don't believe anyone that tries to convince you otherwise.

IJustLostTheGame · 28/12/2018 10:05

Go to a minor injuries unit. If it is broken somewhere they can immobilise it. If you've sprained it they will tell you how to manage it. You don't want to damage it any further.

EvenLess · 28/12/2018 10:09

Please get it checked OP. A bad sprain can be worse than a broken bone. I had a grade 3 ligament tear in my foot and ankle about 18 months ago, and it took a long time to recover (partly because I was living in the US and couldn't really afford the physio I needed). Best of luck Flowers

Definitely worth a trip to a&e. I did similar in the Spring, OH diagnosed sprained ankle, after a painful night I finally went to a&e just to put my mind at rest and to give work an idea when I might be back - turned out to be badly broken ankle and leg.

DitzyPrints · 28/12/2018 13:20

Hi all back from suprisingly speedy a and e sprained ankle but broken big toe. Sprained ankle much more sore than the toe! Thanks for judging me to go

BlytheSpiritsSpirit · 28/12/2018 13:39

Well done, OP. Hope you're on the mend soon.

DitzyPrints · 28/12/2018 13:40

👍
Not judging I meant nudging 😂

Hope you are feeling better soon, meanwhile feet up and good book/film is recommended treatment

lanbro · 28/12/2018 14:14

Sprains can be much worse than breaks. I've sprained something in my shoulder and am in agony, and have been for over 2 weeks. Normally I would self care for a sprain but saw gp this morning as so painful...Been prescribed codeine and told it could take up to 12 weeks to heal Shock
