3 yr old on antibiotics, very upset tummy.

Ds jas been prescribbed amoxicilin. Hes never had to have antibiotics before. Disregarding how foul it tastes and smells, it has really upset his tummy, several "wet trumps" a day and I've just gone in to check on him to find that he's pop's in his sleep , a first since potty training. And he was covered. Also, he has barely eaten in 3 days (almost nothing).

My questions are, is this normal? I know I get an upset tummy on amoxicillin. But I feel not eating may not be helping. Also, the bottle says to finish the course, but doesn't say for how long? 5ml 3x a day. I imagined 5 days. So far he's had:
Day 1 - 2 doses (saw gp at lunchtime)
Day 2 - 3 doses
Day 3 (today) 2 doses
Was going to give him the 3rd just now but after a day of complaining of having a poorly tummy and then soiling himself, I'm not sure he should have it.

How long is a course and is there anything I can do to make it better for him?

I'd give 111 a call and see if they can suggest something, what's the antibiotics for? Hope his better soon xx

How long a course is will depend on what he's being treated for. In general, amoxicillin is less bad on the gut than a lot of antibiotics...but as you say, empty tummy probably not helping.

Complete the course means give the recommended doses until it's finished.

The stomach upset is a really common side affect of the medication.

He's got an ear infection.

He needs a take every dose on time and have 3 doses everyday. Either the bottle will day for how many days or it will have been premeasured with the correct volume for the course needed- in unsure call the dispensing chemist.

Upset tummy is common with antibiotics. Try giving him a probiotic to even things out- kids tend to like the drink type ones (danone do a nicer tasting one than yakult).

Antibiotics kill bacteria but that includes the good bacteria in your stomach which causes the upset tummy. I convinced ds to put on pull ups when he had antibiotics.
Like mortified said probiotics will help.

Amoxicillin for an ear infection has always been a week long course for my 3 year old, which has been the entire contents of the bottle that the pharmacist has made up from a powder.

Ok thank you. It doesn't say on the bottle how long for. I put a happy on overnight which he wasn't at all happy about but will get sone nappy pants today and sone actimel.

Personally I would ring and speak to someone about it, not all antibiotics cause that much of an upset stomach. There may be an allergy or intolerance to those particular ones and there are others that can be given.

IJustLostTheGame · 27/12/2018 08:09

I'd ring and ask the GP and make sure it is the drug causing the side effects and not a nasty coincidental bug.
Live yoghurt is supposed to help restore gut bacteria after antibis.
Hope he feels better soon

Gave him.the dose this morning, he'd had some breakfast and was feeling better. 30 seconds after the medicine he vomited the whole lot back up. GP said to stop the antibiotics. He's since been sick again but gp said it might take a couple of days for his stomach to settle.

This happened to my boy at about the same age. He was crying in pain bless him. I took him back to the GP who prescribed a different antibiotic, and the pain disappeared. Hope hes ok, poor thing.
