Is this weird? Smell related

DH took DS (3) out for a walk this morning and picked up some milk and got a coffee. When they came back I gave DS a kiss on the head then said 'did you see your mum?'

He was amazed and asked how I knew. He said she had joined them for a coffee.

I could smell her on his hair. And told him I could smell other people on him 24 hours after he had seen them. He thought this was weird but I thought it was weird he couldn't smell other people on him, when DS has been around other people.

I can also smell when people are ill, especially DS ands even our cats.

Is this wolf like sense of smell (in DH's words!) normal or am I a bit weird?

Not weird at all.

MikeUniformMike · 26/12/2018 17:35

I have a similar sense of smell. I'm weird.

calpop · 26/12/2018 17:37

Me and my DS are like that, him more so that me. If I see my mum briefly at lunchtime he walks in from afterschool club and says she's been there. At school they use him like a bloodhoud and send him intonthe changing rooms when in a mess as he picks up all the clothes, gives them a quick sniff and then tells the teacher who they belong to. Some people have a more developed sense of smell I think.

InanimateCarbonRod · 26/12/2018 17:38

I have that too. Super smell powers!

yiskasha · 26/12/2018 17:39

I'm the same, and I can smell when people are about to sneeze. My cousin is also the same, so I just assumed some people in our family were more sensitive to smells. I think it's normal 😊

MrsTommyBanks · 26/12/2018 17:42

I always know when anyone is going to be ill from their smell.
I can really smell other people on people to.

starcrossedseahorse · 26/12/2018 17:43

Me too. Some people have super sensory powers!

ParadiseLaundry · 26/12/2018 17:44

@calpop wow that's impressive! I bet the school are delighted not to have to put things in the lost property!

I knew I wasn't alone! Last Christmas when we had lots of family for dinner the smell of all of the people was lingering around for days and I hated it, so maybe it's a territorial thing. This year I made sure I opened windows and lit candles so it wasn't as bad.

I'm also pregnant which makes it worse (better?) although I can't remember my sense of smell bring better in my last pregnancy.

I also have super smelling powers.

Hoppinggreen · 26/12/2018 17:52

Yes me too.
If you gave me an item from the house of one of my friends and family I could probably tell you where it belonged. Unfortunately I struggle with people who don’t smell “nice” as it’s very very noticeable to me.
When I was pg it was awful and I’m sure it contributed to my severe sickness

RandomMess · 26/12/2018 18:24

I am sensitive to smells I'd hate it to me any more than it is. I can be gagging and DH can't smell a thing Angrysome of he DC are like me in this respect the others not so much.

MrsTommyBanks · 26/12/2018 18:30

Yes yes to the power being stronger during pregnancy.
I have very vivid memories of a row with my late Mum over some minced beef. I was adamant. We had fish fingers. My Mum trusted my nose. Mince was rank thrown away.

Reaa · 26/12/2018 18:31

Can anyone else on here also taste different things?

If someone has been handling money, I can taste it.

Perfume and aftershave, I can taste it.

E20mom · 26/12/2018 18:32

I think that's normal

iAMequal · 26/12/2018 18:32

I'm a teacher and reassign lost and unlabelled jumpers by sniffing them and passing them back to their owners. The children are enthralled by the whole process!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 26/12/2018 18:38

Not weird at all OP/
It's a mum thing.

OComeAllYeFaithful · 26/12/2018 18:39

Oh yes I can tell who has been with DD from her smell! I found it quite hard when she first started pre-school! (she is a very cuddly child so came home smelling of other perfumes). I can tell when she’s been with my Dad and he’s met up with his DP because I can smell her perfume on DD’s head. People’s houses have distinct smells too.

Beautyandthe · 26/12/2018 19:32

I have a strong sense of smell too and can smell when others have been in the house, and smell if people are ill. But not cats.
I actually hate having a good sense of smell as I can't eat a lot of foods due to the smell and I also dislike going to other people's homes unless they are very clean, as I get overwhelmed by the smell even if it is not a bad smell.

And yes, it's difficult when people don't smell nice. I recently had to change my dentist as all I could smell was sweaty balls during my checkup ! Female next time pls.

mortifiedmama · 26/12/2018 20:06

I'm like you. I can smell where DH (or DS) has been, who with and what they've eaten or drunk. DH thinks it's witch craft.
