To think it's weird serving all drinks at room temp and no ice

Mil does this. She leaves drinks in the gaurage overnight then brings them all inside during the morning.

Then acts like I'm being crazy for wanting to but a bottle in the freezer for half an hour or asking for ice as "they've been in the guarage all night so are cold" they aren't cold at all - next to the oven and in the warm kitchen for hours.

You are not AIBU. My DF does this, they don't drink lager or beer so store it in the kitchen cupboard, doesn't go near the fridge. Confused

Is there any ice?

bullyingadvice2017 · 26/12/2018 12:05

I turn up with a bag of ice if I'm planning on drinking. And my own drink and pop of course. Cheerily ask if they have any freezer space, otherwise whack it outside in a bucket. Don't like warm drinks.

Hobbitbobbit · 26/12/2018 12:07

Yuck no, I really don’t like luke warm beverages, either hot or cold and not in between.

RagingWhoreBag · 26/12/2018 12:08

When the fridge is full it’s difficult to chill then but yeah, I bought a bag of ice with the shopping for that reason. If she has form, I’d pick up a bag of ice from the garage on your way there!

MeetOnTheSIedge · 26/12/2018 12:09

Yes, luckily I'm happy with red wine or bitter which are not meant to be cold, but everything else needs to be properly chilled or with ice.

AnyFucker · 26/12/2018 12:10

God, yeah

Champagne on Xmas morning at room temp. Bloody awful. A warm G and T (from a can...bleugghhh).

LeonoraFlorence · 26/12/2018 12:13

Ugh I hate that too!

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 12:14

I can't drink red wine for numerous reasons, one being it's room temperature. Bleurgh.

Bunnyhop1502 · 26/12/2018 12:29

That’s a such a MIL thing to do! Warm lemonade with half a measure of cheap supermarket gin Hmm

Rosepetalgeranium · 26/12/2018 12:33

Glad it's not just my mil.

She's very much "well I don't like ice cold drinks" so fuck anyone that does? Hmm

We lived with my MIL for a short time. Evening meal was on the table at 5pm prompt every night, no exceptions. Despite the fact that neither of us were home from work before 6:30.

I loved her though (RIP)

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 12:43

Growing up we used to have a cup of tea with our evening meal. Confused

I think my parents' generation think ice will dilute the drink or something, and they really don't like drinks too cold.

ChristineBaskets · 26/12/2018 12:45

Ugh my mil does this, also all beverages must be the cheapest rola cola equivalent and will be served in glasses that are covered in fluff from her tea towels. Envy

Rosepetalgeranium · 26/12/2018 13:25

It's infuriating that I put it in the fridge then she moves it somewhere warm "just incase anyone wants it". Is it really so difficult to ask what someone wants or to put it back in the fridge after no one even wanted it out of the fridge in the first place. She has two fridges and loads of space..

Must be a generation thing. My parents always served drinks at room temperature. Yesterday I asked DM if I could put the Diet Coke in the fridge. She said "if you really want to".

My father (also RIP) insisted on lunch at 1pm. He would start to pace at 12.55 if anyone (his adult children) invited hadn't arrived. Any latecomers knew better than to ring the bell and would find alternative sources of food. Excuses such as M25 pile up were not well received.

MeetOnTheSIedge · 26/12/2018 13:40

Or they'll say "yes there's some ice in the freezer" and you find a tray of cubes thst are set in permafrost, adorned with crumbs and a random pea and smelling faintly of fish.

Rosepetalgeranium · 26/12/2018 13:49

Well I've learned that it's a generational thing, but what stops them from putting one soft drink in the fridge?

There's half a dozen different types, all tepid and unappealing.

The ice with breadcrumbs is vile, it's just very stale water

OlennasWimple · 26/12/2018 13:52

Yes, this is something that both my parents and my inlaws do.

Bleurgh

ChristineBaskets · 26/12/2018 14:05

Also if they do get ice in for you then they make a big fuss about it like you requested the glass be rimmed with gold leaf and garnished with strands of saffron Hmm

AnyFucker · 26/12/2018 14:08

Oh yes, the manky years-old ice cubes that whiff of cod.

Yuk.

Hohocabbage · 26/12/2018 14:11

My family would do this but that’s because they were once-a-year drinkers. Warm baileys etc. Happy memories!

Miljah · 26/12/2018 14:14

My parents regarded ice as 'a luxury item'! Grin And the only drink that was cold was milk.

I thought this was normal til I went to live in Oz for several years where all drinks are refrigerated.

It was brought home to me when I visited the UK with my DH to be about 22 years ago; we'd been for a walk and came to a village shop and went to buy a refreshing soft-drink; and there they were, tepid on a sunlit shelf...

Yuk!

Torvi · 26/12/2018 14:15

We are visiting my family who live in the Canary Islands where it's lovely and warm at the moment.
My DF was horrified when I served him a rum and coke with ice the other day. He fished it out with a spoon Hmm

Orangedaisy · 26/12/2018 14:17

My Mil serves Pimms with room temperature lemonade, no ice and no trimmings.

ParadiseLaundry · 26/12/2018 14:28

Definitely a generational thing I think. Although my parents kept soft drinks in the fridge I remember all of my friends parents keeping bottles of pop on top of the fridge. PIL do this too.

Generational, along with having to have hot drinks scalding hot!
