To think it's weird serving all drinks at room temp and no ice

Mil does this. She leaves drinks in the gaurage overnight then brings them all inside during the morning.

Then acts like I'm being crazy for wanting to but a bottle in the freezer for half an hour or asking for ice as "they've been in the guarage all night so are cold" they aren't cold at all - next to the oven and in the warm kitchen for hours.

We have it but not often!

And Baileys. Do people put that in the fridge too? I dont think we'd have space!!

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 26/12/2018 18:48

I obviously need to learn for future reference .

And whisky?? Lots of people drink that without ice. Surely thats not kept in a fridge too?

JessieMcJessie · 26/12/2018 18:49

I’m not sure what everyone is chilling really? Just fizzy pop and white wine?

Lager- unlike bitter it’s disgusting at room temperature. Sparkling water. Tonic, ginger ale, bitter lemon and other mixers. Fruit juice. Elderflower cordial type drinks. Iced tea.

AnyFucker · 26/12/2018 18:49

Baileys should be at room temp, IMO

And no ice !

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 18:50

I don't drink neat gin or whisky.

If I have a brandy & Coke or a Southern Comfort & Lemonade the fizzy component must have come out of the fridge IYSWIM, and an ice cube.

BestZebbie · 26/12/2018 18:54

Doesn't being cold ruin the flavour? I never chill anything and fish out ice cubes because otherwise all I can taste is cold and a dilute flavour of the drink, instead of the proper taste...

Juanbablo · 26/12/2018 18:54

We are an ice cold drink family. Over the festive period we have chilled apple, orange and cranberry juices, Coke, lemonade, lager, white wine, prosecco and bucks fizz. I wouldn't want to drink any of those things at room temperature.

Crimbobimbo · 26/12/2018 18:56

Is it generational or an indicator of social class perhaps? Using my family as the basis for me study.

V accurate description of the old, breadcrumb crusted, fish whiff ice.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 18:57

Everything tastes fine to me with ice in it. It's what 'ice and a slice' is all about. Grin

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 26/12/2018 18:58

AnyFucker - what I thought (and do!) But am just checking as Im obviously a heathen in these things!

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 18:59

I am not a fan of Baileys. Someone poured me a pint of it once, with a straw.

StealthPolarBear · 26/12/2018 19:00

I like diet coke at room temp, have only recently discovered this. If out and about I can drink it cold but can't bear ice in it.
Whitw wine and water have to be very cold

goforkyourself · 26/12/2018 19:20

Definitely a generation thing, I have to play hunt the ice at my mum's. I remember my mum sighing heavily upon opening my freezer and saying 'Oh gofork, why do you have SO much ice?'

Confused I live in the fucking Mediterranean Grin

KiteMarked · 26/12/2018 19:24

Ah, we did this - not nearly enough room in the fridge to keep all the drinks cold, and I forgot to buy any ice.

I shall remember for next year in case my get-togethers become the topic of a Mumsnet thread!

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 19:52

Putting them outside or in the garage is always good. Better than room temp anyway.

PreseaCombatir · 26/12/2018 20:19

Baileys at room temperature? Shock
Nooo, baileys is served from the fridge, and then with added ice!
Also, dilute juice also lives in the fridge!
Warm drinks are rank to me, my mum does this, she’ll have a 2l bottle of fizzy pop, pour a drink and leave it out. I’m always putting it back int he fridge, or adding ice cubes.

PreseaCombatir · 26/12/2018 20:22

My food has to be piping hot, and my drinks have to be ice cold!

isittheholidaysyet · 26/12/2018 20:31

Please don't chill the real ale.

PurdysChocolate · 26/12/2018 20:37

My PIL do this, but we are slowly training them and they now put a few drinks in the fridge for me and DH :)

Miljah · 26/12/2018 21:28

Some real ales suggest you chill them a little! As do some red wines!

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 21:30

Bleurgh to Real Ale, can't drink it whatever the temp.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 26/12/2018 21:50

So looks like we're doing okay on the red wine/real ale occasional baileys front.

Failing to put gin and tonic in the fridge, and need to remember to refrigerate fizzy if we ever have guests that bring any?

Meangirls36 · 26/12/2018 22:38

Ice is a luxury to old people like duvets and TV on demand and nice coffee. Or staying in bed all day reading when they could probably do with a rest! No you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn your retired and the Dr wants you to take it easy.

ARandomPoster · 26/12/2018 22:58

I adore very cold soft drinks. Dh likes them room temperature. We have to buy cans instead of bottles so we can keep half in the fridge and half out of it.

I remember going to the US as a teen and being told by some Brits to specify no ice in my drink or I'd get a cup full of ice and a tiny bit of drink. I quickly learned that I preferred the cup of ice with a little bit of drink.

And when I was pregnant I craved it. A large glass full of ice with a little bit of cold water to help it melt. I got through about 11 pint glasses a day!

ThanksItHasPockets · 26/12/2018 23:09

Although there is some variation there is basically no red wine that should be served at more than 18 degrees. Light reds like Beaujolais should be around 12 degrees. If the wine has been sitting in a warm kitchen then it needs to go in the fridge for half an hour.
