Knife block sets?

I promise myself every year I’ll get a decent set of knives in the sales.

Can’t quite stretch to Global, any other recommendations? Or should I wait and save fo Global?

Don’t buy a set, they are very poor value for money. Buy a decent block and then buy the individual knives you need. I have a small vegetable knife, an 8 inch cook’s knife and a serrated knife, that’s all I tend to need. I also have a bread knife with a plastic handle that came from a kitchen supply place and a carving knife and fork, that’s it.

Save for global Grin

I treated myself to this set after being sick to death of trying to cut through large veg with blunt knives. It has been worth every penny - although I didn't pay that price for it - look at some of the catering company websites for cheaper prices!

I agree with NotAnotherJaffaCake, especially about finding a shop that sells to the trade. Best investment would be to learn how to sharpen a knife.

I love my Globals, but I bought them individually so I’ve got the ones I need.

I didn’t bother with the matching block, I got a universal one which has a load of thin flexible stick-type things so it will take any selection of sizes. It easily houses my 5 Globals plus DH’s 3 other knives. It doesn’t look as fancy but it’s very practical, and easy to clean.

It’s also worth getting a Minosharp ceramic water sharpener, great for any knife.

I clicked on to recommend global!

Could you buy either a knife or two and the empty block or just a couple of the knives?

All you really need for almost all kitchen tasks is a good chef’s knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife.

Maybe a filleting knife if you eat lots of fish

If you stick to the basics you’ll be able to get much better quality knives for your money.
