Can you return stuff without a receipt?

I'm guessing the answer is probably no....

ExDH bought me some lovely presents but seems to have forgotten they are the exact same lovely presents he bought me last year! I've got no use for them. I know where he bought them from, could I return them for store credit?

I think you would be able to return them, however without a receipt won’t it be at their current sale price and only for store credit?

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 26/12/2018 02:07

It depends on the shop but I know John Lewis you can get a gift voucher not a refund within 35d

IWantMyHatBack · 26/12/2018 02:17

Lots of shops will if you ask. "can I return, unwanted present'. Might be credit/voucher though.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 26/12/2018 02:29

You might get a credit note.

They're under no obligation to accept returns if there's nothing wrong with the items.

Did he pay by card? If so, you can use a bank statement as proof of purchase.

lilyboleyn · 26/12/2018 07:09

Also, you might struggle with the perfume because lots of shops will want to know you actually bought it from them. I’ve fallen foul of that before...

OComeAllYeFaithful · 26/12/2018 08:20

If any of it is sold by Boots, they will exchange without a receipt (exchange but not refund) so you might get credit for the perfume? I’d sell the hat on eBay.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 26/12/2018 08:24

Totally depends on the shop, most won’t give a refund but might’ve credit more. I wouldn’t try for a few days though lots won’t do it this week as they’re so busy. Also worth baring in mind that if any of the items have been reduced in the sake you’ll only be credited the current price for them.

Singlenotsingle · 26/12/2018 08:28

You will need proof of purchase of some sort if you haven't got the receipts. And if he bought using a card, they will want to refund back onto that card rather than giving you cash.

Definitely for JL’s own stuff (at least it was the case two years ago) but they’re not supposed to do it on branded products because they can’t guarantee it was bought from them.

I’ve never returned without a receipt and had anything other than store credit for the price that day, which is reasonable.

Ah thanks everyone. He’s going to look for the receipt but if he can’t find it I’ll stick it all on eBay
