How soon can I (reasonably) take down my Christmas decorations?

Just that really...

I have a 2yo DD who has loved Christmas, and I normally do too, but it's been a shit one for me this year. Husband moved out on 23rd so not been the best time and I've just had enough of my house being a tip and hardly any space to move due to all of the bits and bobs that come with Christmas.

How long do I have to leave them up before I can start straightening out my house and making it feel like a home for just DD and I? I don't want to take it all away from her too soon (as in the tree and sparkles etc) but I want my house back!

Ours are going down on Saturday (put up on the 11th December), like others I want to start the New Year afresh.

I am a bit over the decs now, I only really put then up for the sake of the DCs.

Topseyt · 26/12/2018 15:59

Towards the end of the week in this house, if I can get away with it. If I had my way they would go up on Christmas Eve and come down on Boxing Day, but my DDs wouldn't wear that one. The compromise is that they can go up once school and college have broken up, and are usually down by New Year.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 26/12/2018 16:09

I am not British and have never come across anyone in real life who takes down decorations on the 26th Dec as though Christmas is over then! Mind you, I only know one person who puts theirs up at the start of Dec, and I don't personally know anyone who puts them up earlier than that.

Ours went up on the 18th this year and that was very early for us but caved to pressure from dd. They will stay up for the 12 days of Christmas and will come down on the 6th.

We have a large family gathering on New Years Day of 25+ people and I couldn't imagine not having the house decorated for that!

MN is a strange place at times..

Usually Boxing Day but we've got the tree in the hall this year so it's not cluttering up the lounge.

GreyGardens88 · 26/12/2018 16:18

Someone on facebook took them down on Christmas day afternoon, as soon as lunch was over Hmm . Mine I will take down when I get home this weekend

Sickenedbychristmaspud · 26/12/2018 16:20

Taken mine down today was pissing me off our living room is small anyway but with the toys from xmas it was getting ridiculous so much better now still got my window lights up

AnnabelleLecter · 26/12/2018 16:28

Ours are staying up until 2nd January. Still more revelry planned here.
They've only been up 10 days. I want another week of twinkly lights.
I don't like clutter at all but I haven't got many decorations and our house is spacious enough to cope.

Ontopofthesunset · 26/12/2018 16:35

I'm not a huge Christmas fan, but I do find the idea of taking the tree down on Boxing Day really odd, as if Christmas is just a day and once you've eaten one big meal and opened some presents it's all over. It seems to make it really oddly transactional. It's not as if we're feasting for every one of the 12 days, but it's still Christmas and it's time to enjoy the lights and the tree without all the stress of preparations. It would be really odd to go to a New Year's Eve party and find the tree gone, wouldn't it?

Shmithecat · 26/12/2018 16:38

Mine came down this morning. It's been a shitty Xmas, don't know why I really bothered. I now feel a lot happier with my lounge back in order.

AnnaMariaDreams · 26/12/2018 16:44

I thought it was bad luck to leave them up after 12th night, never heard anything about taking them down sooner.
Probably 31st before heading out to a friends for New Year celebrations. We’re back at work on 2nd so I need the house tidy for then and will be tired on New Years Day.

mrselizabethdarcy · 26/12/2018 16:44

Mine came down this morning. I always take them down on boxing day. Christmas is finished and now we can enjoy being off school and work in a lovely tidy house.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/12/2018 16:51

We always take ours down on Jan 1st.
Though I have loads of those LED flame effect candles that I am leaving out (winter rather than Christmas)

You could always remove a few at a time if you want to still keep some decorations up for the DC though at 2yo your DC might be fine with putting them away and having the new toys to play with?

Di11y · 26/12/2018 17:30

get rid of the tree and keep stuff hanging out the way.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 26/12/2018 17:35

Probably New Year’s Day! I like them up at New Years! Traditional yearly photo of kids (looking all posh for New Years party)

Just when the mood takes is really and we are fed up of looking at it all. Will definitely be before the 5th.

My lounge is still littered with toys and other random crap which I have to find a home for.

dontpointatme · 26/12/2018 17:42

They're all down, and she's happy as she has more space to play in, hurray!

Have left the cards up and the outside lights up as she loves those the best.

Tomorrow. I was itching to do it today once my guests left but my (adult) kids rebelled!
There are 6 adults in this house and no space. I can't wait to get the huge tree down and hoover and tidy everywhere!!! I may leave the lights round the fireplace though as they are cheerful :)

brusselsproutfan · 26/12/2018 17:46

Mine come down NYE or NYD
My youngest DC Birthday is Jan 4th so like house clean and not Christmassy before then I would never leave until 5th

bellsonthesleigh · 26/12/2018 17:57

Back to work on 3rd so tree down on 2nd.

HJWT · 26/12/2018 18:32

We are doing ours Friday so i can deep clean and declutter over the weekend!! Cant deep clean with the stuff everywhere and drives me mad after 28 days 😂

Poppiesway1 · 26/12/2018 18:36

I usually do ours New Year’s Eve.. but as I’ve still not even put up the majority of our decorations I’ll leave them for a day or so after New Year’s Day

Parker231 · 26/12/2018 18:40

Now Christmas is over we’ll start taking them down from tomorrow so everything is cleaned up before New Years Eve party. I want everything away and tidy again.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 26/12/2018 19:01

Christmas isn’t over! There are 12 days of Christmas...

Crunchymum · 26/12/2018 19:02

1st or 2nd for us. I like it still up for NYE.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 19:05

Christmas isn’t over!

For the many that have returned to work already and others that will have by the end of the week they may disagree with that.

TinselandToblerones · 26/12/2018 19:11

Down on the 12th night!

They don’t go up until a week before Christmas though.

The year I had DS, we came home from hospital around 11pm Christmas Eve, the decorations were all down Christmas morning
