How soon can I (reasonably) take down my Christmas decorations?

Just that really...

I have a 2yo DD who has loved Christmas, and I normally do too, but it's been a shit one for me this year. Husband moved out on 23rd so not been the best time and I've just had enough of my house being a tip and hardly any space to move due to all of the bits and bobs that come with Christmas.

How long do I have to leave them up before I can start straightening out my house and making it feel like a home for just DD and I? I don't want to take it all away from her too soon (as in the tree and sparkles etc) but I want my house back!

I'm bored shitless of plucking cats out of the tree like over-ripe apples.

I feel your pain. Normally leave mine up until 2nd Jan, but now we have 2 cats it's coming down sooner, probably 28th.

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2018 23:59

Ours will be down by the weekend. I like it all tidy for when everyone goes back to school/work.

I don't do clutter very well.

Honeyroar · 26/12/2018 00:02

I usually think it's a bit humbug ish to take them down immediately after Xmas (but yep each to their own) but in your case I can totally understand why you'd want to. Do it! Make that house feel your own. It will help. Well done on getting through Xmas full stop.

Really tempted to take mine down tomorrow (need to make room for the gigantic dolls house that DD got from GP)

LoniceraJaponica · 26/12/2018 00:03

Not humbugish, but a bit joyless.

VimFuego101 · 26/12/2018 00:07

I'll be taking mine down as soon as I can be bothered tomorrow, so I can clean all the surfaces they've been sitting on and sweep up the (fake) tree bits.

beanaseireann · 26/12/2018 00:11

After the 6th of January.

Ours only went up on Xmas Eve and will be staying up for the 12 days of Xmas.

Grandadwasthatyou · 26/12/2018 00:15

Dementedpixie..... I was going to say exactly the same. It's not bad luck to take them down before the 6th jan rather if you keep them up after that. Apparently. Anyway mine is coming down tomorrow.

I've just done Mine!

Take them down tomorrow. I took mine down on Boxing day once after a particularly shitty Christmas and it made me feel so much better. Flowers

sweetkitty · 26/12/2018 00:27

Whenever you want its your tree.

Ours goes up on the 1st Dec down on 1st Jan DG poor DH back to work on the second

Reaa · 26/12/2018 00:31

27th I think I will be, Older DC & DH all go back to work then so Christmas will be over.

Might leave the outside lights up a bit longer but the tree and other bits in the house can be taken down.

NightOwlHoney · 26/12/2018 00:31

We're 27th too.

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2018 00:34

Mine only went up on the 22nd so they are definitely staying up until 6th January.

EnidButton · 26/12/2018 00:45

Whenever you want. There are no rules. I'd go with the 27th if I was in your situation, so you have tomorrow to do other things more relaxing than wrestling with Christmas decs and cleaning.

EnidButton · 26/12/2018 00:47

I take mine down New Year's Eve usually as I like the few days after Christmas to relax but want to start the new year completely fresh. I get lots of daffodils in to brighten things up when the lights come down.

MagentaRocks · 26/12/2018 01:06

I don’t even put any up. I do display the cards but they will be down by the weekend.

dontpointatme · 26/12/2018 08:00

Thanks all, may make a start on it today then, I just can't wait to be able to have our living room back and make space for her to play with her stuff, and get the rest of his stuff gone!

Wow, glad I'm not the only one talking about taking the decorations down!

We had a nice day but we don't have the biggest space and now with extra toys lying about we're taking ours down on the 28th.

RedWineIsFabulous · 26/12/2018 08:12

I am sorry you have had a shit time. You do whatever is best for you.

Ordinarily though it really depresses me that there are so many Christmas haters on Mn that take the tree down Christmas night / Boxing morning.
Thankfully I only hear of it on
Mn though as it’s very much still Christmas everywhere else.
We take ours down on the 12th night as is tradition.

Juanbablo · 26/12/2018 08:12

Ours will come down on the 30th. Dh is going away on NYE and I need his help to get the tree and decs in the loft so need to do it before he goes.

MaverickSnoopy · 26/12/2018 08:12

We keep ours up for the 12 days of Christmas, so down on 5th or 6th. We haven't had them up for long though. I can't get into the idea of decs going up early in December. I would be bored of them by now otherwise. However I grew up that Christmas is celebrated for the 12 days of Christmas so have carried on the tradition.

SixButterflies · 26/12/2018 08:58

Boxing Day. Always Boxing Day. Loathe the bloody things.
