Is it me or have Pigs in Blankets become more or a thing than in previous years?

Now I don’t eat meat, but I do remember Pigs in Blankets from the when I was young.
I’m not saying they never existed before but I have noticed a lot more references to them this year.
Pigs in Blankets flavour Pringles, foot long ones, mentioned in adverts more.

Or is this like when you learn a new word and then you suddenly see it everywhere?

I didn't know about them until about 10 years ago, but my mum never did them and I'be been veggie for 20 years so didn't have any reason to until I was living with someone who wanted them. I think I lived in my own little Christmas bubble and didn't have any reason to think people did things differently until I needed to know.

BlackForestCake · 24/12/2018 20:56

When I was a kid we just had the chipolata sausages on their own.

I think there is a motive on the part of the supermarkets to sell you a foil tray with pigs in blankets pre-prepared, rather than just the sausages and bacon.

You can now also buy a pouch of pre-soaked dried fruit for Xmas pud/cake/whatever.

concretesieve · 24/12/2018 21:04

Yes - this came up on another thread a few days ago - AFAIR, they came in about 1990. Before that, we had chipolatas and bacon rolls as separate items.

Helpmemyhairisterrible · 24/12/2018 21:06

My sister said she made 80 of the things yesterday. Her lot would rather eat those than turkey.

ChesterGreySideboard · 24/12/2018 21:07

I remember my mum making them and I haven’t eaten Christmas dinner with my mum since 1991.
I don’t recall them being called pigs in blankets though.

They were always a thing in our house. But they’re far nicer than the turkey, and I think that, now our generation is “running” Christmas, they’ve become more of a thing. We’ve got loads!

Bluetitbirdy · 24/12/2018 21:08

Posh sausage rolls right?

cheesenpickles · 24/12/2018 21:09

Pigs in blankets have always been a thing in my Christmases, all 34 of them... BUT, my mum was Canadian so that could be why.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/12/2018 21:09

Pigs in blankets is an American term...I thought it referred to sausage rolls.
In my heart they will always be “sausages wrapped in bacon”....est. lates 80s/ early 90s

cheesenpickles · 24/12/2018 21:10

1957 apparently.

Is it me or have Pigs in Blankets become more or a thing than in previous years?
Whatsnewwithyou · 24/12/2018 21:12

In America (where I'm from) pigs in a blanket refer to sausages wrapped in pastry, i.e. sausage rolls.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 24/12/2018 21:12

I only ever remember having them with a school Christmas dinner - and that I assume was because they didn’t do multiple meats and stuffing like our family Christmas dinners!

Tr1skel1on · 24/12/2018 21:12

I'm 43 and we have always had them. However I have never had red cabbage or chestnuts. Regional differences I find so interesting

ChesterGreySideboard · 24/12/2018 21:13

I thought sausages rolls only referred to sausage in pastry.

Kimtag · 24/12/2018 21:19

We had a sausage when I was a child. I have always added pigs in blankets and have been making Christmas dinner for 25 years.

cavycavy · 24/12/2018 21:19

In our house we refer to them as simply “pigs” as we have them with every roast now that we’re the adults and get to choose. But we make our own as they are tricky to find in the non-Christmas period!!

profpoopsnagle · 24/12/2018 21:21

We had them, only at Christmas and only one (although they were a small chipolata size, about 2x the size I see today). I do agree now, that they have far more prominence on the plate than I remember, and it would be a maj
or faux pas to serve only 1pp.

Leeds2 · 24/12/2018 21:21

When I was in Tesco last week, they had boxes of pigs in duvets. I was in a rush so couldn't look what they were - my memory may be playing tricks, but I think they were positioned at the end of an aisle, so not refrigerated and maybe not meat at all!
I have just read the PIB thread on the Christmas section of the forum, and can't believe I have never thought to make any left over PIBs (if there are any!) into a sandwich on Boxing Day. Genius!!

bumblebee39 · 24/12/2018 21:21

I don't remember ever not having them

Kintan · 24/12/2018 21:22

Im a child of the eighties and we always had them growing up, so not a new thing I don’t think.

TheFifthKey · 24/12/2018 21:23

We always had them but they’ve only been commonly known as pigs in blankets in the last ten years in this country I think.

MaisyPops · 24/12/2018 21:23

Pigs in blankets have always been a thing (and tasty too).

What seems to be new is taking something tasty and then applying the flavour to random shit. (E.g. prosecco flavoured chocolate, gin flavoured flapjack, pigs in blanket flavoured crisps)

museumum · 24/12/2018 21:25

We have been making them at home since the 70s.
Hadn’t seen them pre-prepared until much more recently though.

Confuzzlediddled · 24/12/2018 21:26

We always called them kilted sausages when I was little!
