Is it me or have Pigs in Blankets become more or a thing than in previous years?

Now I don’t eat meat, but I do remember Pigs in Blankets from the when I was young.
I’m not saying they never existed before but I have noticed a lot more references to them this year.
Pigs in Blankets flavour Pringles, foot long ones, mentioned in adverts more.

Or is this like when you learn a new word and then you suddenly see it everywhere?

I thought Delia invented them. Am I wrong?

ChesterGreySideboard · 24/12/2018 21:27

I don’t mean that they are a new thing, but that they are being marketed more as an essential part of Christmas.

Pigs in kilts or Celtic pigs

Kintan · 24/12/2018 21:29

We never had them at any other time of the year so I’m guessing they have always been a Christmas thing?

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/12/2018 21:29

They've always been a thing but I think this year is the first for the bigger than chipolata or triple sausage ones.

abbsisspartacus · 24/12/2018 21:29

They are being marketed on a huge scale these days I can't even get proper tiny sausages anymore

concretesieve · 24/12/2018 21:36

Really interesting to see how far back they go Xmas Smile Had to look up the pigs in duvets - they're pigs in blankets wrapped in flaky pastry like a sausage roll

I think I mentioned on the other thread that Miss Read uses the term in one of her novels but for sausages tucked in a blanket of mash.

Busytizzy · 24/12/2018 22:35

Kilted sausages here too!

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 24/12/2018 22:39

I can't eat pulverised pieces of pig!!!

Pigs in blankets and dates in blankets (bacon) have always been on our Christmas dinner.

Schmoobarb · 25/12/2018 12:46

I’ve only ever had them as part of a dinner out, but it’s been a thing for years. I do like them but we just tend to buy the sausages.

bumblebee39 · 25/12/2018 13:48

If so I am very happy

They are one of the best bits of Xmas

MrsTommyBanks · 25/12/2018 13:53

I only heard of them about 15 years ago, when my DD fell in love with them.
To me they were a curse to cook with everything else.
No pigs in blankets here this year. DD has left home and her Fiance chef is bearing the load.
I'm having venison Xmas Smile

amusedbush · 25/12/2018 14:31

I am 28 and they have always been a big part of Christmas in my family. We called them ‘kilted sausages’ though, never pigs in blankets. To be honest I though pigs in blankets were an american thing and not the same at all?

pinkmagic1 · 25/12/2018 16:21

I think the first time I had them was as a teen in the early nineties. I can't remember them being a thing before that.

ScreamingBadSanta · 25/12/2018 16:26

Our family didn't have them in my childhood (70s/80s0. I don't really like them - overload of pork - so I never serve them. I can imagine if you had huge numbers for Christmas dinner, they might be useful in making the main meat dish go further.

parrotonmyshoulder · 25/12/2018 16:39

My grandma always did them - early 80s but I imagine she’d done them in my dad’s childhood as well. She made her own, of course. I think it’s just the advent of pre-prepared food and advertising that makes us all aware of them.

PenguinPandas · 25/12/2018 16:50

I think we always had them as children but only at Christmas. My DS loves them, I'm not bothered about them.

UserMe18 · 25/12/2018 16:50

Growing up my mum did sausages and then bacon wrapped up on its own, always suited me as I didn't like sausages. It was my fave part of the meal but yeah I think with social media and the like it's just all the more visible and spoken about now rather than just an unstated known fact!

PurpleWithRed · 25/12/2018 16:55

Omg I have just realised I forgot to cook the pigs In blankets for Christmas lunch! Oh well, they will make a vey nice snack later on 😂

lavalampoon · 25/12/2018 16:55

I was always aware what they were but we never really had them at Christmas. I believe it has become more popular in recent years. My grandma used to put a couple of chipolatas on the plate. She also served mash which is apparently more traditional than roast potatoes. Apparently Yorkshire puddings is not a traditional accompaniment either. The pigs in blankets thing has got very popular, I was offered crisps of that flavour at the weekend. Wasn't too convinced!!

ScreamingBadSanta · 25/12/2018 17:04

We've never had Yorkshire puddings at Christmas.

Lekky12 · 25/12/2018 17:05

I dunno but I had 36 of the little buggers in the fridge that I forgot to cook today. Cheesed off is an under statement.... 🤣

Ruddle91 · 25/12/2018 17:12

Always had them. I'm late 20s.
