Anyone else think that the christmas service from Kings College marks the start of the real Christmass than that the commercial madness of this time of year?.

It was the 100th year service today it being started in 1918 and also mark's the retirement of Stephen Cleobury and the appontment of a new man from Amercia

It always make me think how proud the mum of the yound lad who starts the service must be as always, utterly professional:)

Apparently the chorister who is chosen to open the service is given very short notice that he has been chosen. This programme always marks the start of Christmas for me.

It should mark the beginning of Christmas, except the bloody Bose kept cutting out. We are in Belgium, so I get it over the interweb. Next year I will be back in UK for good, so i can listen to it on the radio properly.

It brings back memories of going and queueing to get in the chapel when I was a kid. Dad and I would drive up to Cambridge to collect his Mum for Christmas. She would work Christmas Eve, we would queue for Kings (I got in one year), and after we would walk to Eden Lillies to get her, go back to her house, put everything in the car and drive back to Hants.

Nana would have been 106 today - so hearing Kings makes me cry as it makes me think of her. She could be a cantankerous old girl, but she was mine. RIP and Happy Birthday Nana. Thinking of you.

Yes, listened to it on R4. Even as an atheist it marks the start of Christmas for me.

Just a test apparently they are streaming the midnight mass from the catholic church in Cambridge!

Thanks for that link, is it normal that it went on so late?

Justaboy · 25/12/2018 01:35

I think it was just a test experimental transmission they have bene transmitting the midnight mass for some years on the radio.
