Does drinking water really help how your skins looks?

I know drinking water is good for you, and I certainly don’t drink enough. But my skin is so drab. How much do I have to drink to make a difference?

Any drinks I should avoid?

Abd does it all REALLY make a difference? Have you seen the difference?!

Well I suppose being dehydrated isn't going to help! But imo it's the good fats that really help skin - olive oil, avocados, coconut oil etc.

I've been low carb/high fat for many years due to health issues and honestly my skin looks younger than most friends my age (though I'd swap it for other aspects of their lives Sad )

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 23/12/2018 22:30

Yes it does. Since I've been drinking at least 2l per day (a few years now) my skin has looked the best it ever has. It's kind of sheeny and glowing and it's very rare I get a spot.

DoveSecret · 23/12/2018 22:53

Yes! If you are dry on the inside the outside will be dry. If I don’t drink enough my skin will feel tight and start flaking. I have eczema and i have to drink 2l a day to keep me moist!

jackio2205 · 23/12/2018 23:03

People always compliment my skin and I honestly don't think I've met anyone that bleats on about water and moisturiser as much as me, its actually a joke amongst friends. Never mind just your skin, for your brain too, I cannot think clearly without lots of water!

OnTrain · 24/12/2018 09:04

Thanks! I do drink water so I’m not dehydrated, but I certainly don’t drink enough to see a difference in my skin.

Never smoking is the kindest thing you can do for your skin..my friend, an avid smoker, is ten years younger than me..but her skin really belies the difference in our ages.
I also drink lots of water.

OnTrain · 24/12/2018 11:55

I don’t smoke, but still look old 😫

It does make a difference imo but bad skin can be down to lots of different factors like sun damage, smoking, drinking etc.

Do you have a skin care routine?

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 24/12/2018 12:05

Well I hate to burst your skin and water bubble, but Dr Michael Mosley did one of those tv programs where twins were given different amounts of water per day to drink for a month and their skin was measured scientifically - ZERO difference.

Also the 2 litres of water per day myth is based on a poor scientific study and then the results were misinterpreted by the media.

Obviously being dehydrated isn't going to do your skin wonders but neither will drinking 2 litres of water a day!

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 24/12/2018 12:06

By the way I may drink 2-3 glasses of water a day and other things (tea etc) and my skin looks very good.

I don't smoke, which is the biggest problem for skin.

Davros · 24/12/2018 12:20

You don't have to get your water from water iyswim! The 2 litre myth was perpetuated by bottled water companies. I almost never drink bottled water, the tap and a Sodastream do the job plus gallons of tea Xmas Blush

OnTrain · 24/12/2018 12:30

Not really sausage I work outdoors so wear F50 in the summer, but nothing in winter. I son’t wear make-up but have in the last couple months started using a night cream.

I wash my face in the shower with showergel

You’re not bursting my bubble von this is exactly what I came on here for.

OP posts:
OnTrain · 24/12/2018 12:33

Oh, no I’d never buy bottled water. Tap all the way.

Good to know about tea! I drink shit tonnes of the stuff!.... 8-12 cups a day

Well, there’s your problem, or at least part of it. You’re stripping your skin of its own natural oils. Try a gentle cleanser instead, like a micellar gel if you like cleaning your face in the shower. I use La Roche Posay micellar gel once a day and just water in the morning.

AwkwardSquad · 24/12/2018 12:38

*Using shower gel on your face

AwkwardSquad · 24/12/2018 12:39

And maybe use sunscreen in winter too, but I have to admit I’m lazy about that.

OnTrain · 24/12/2018 12:42

But awkward surely I’m stripping my whole body of oils then?

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 24/12/2018 12:44

Yes shower gel far too harsh. In my experience finding a cleanser that works well for you is one of the best things for good skin. I love Eve Lom (very pricey though but lasts for ages) but equally as good (maybe better even, and cheaper) is Lush's Ultrabland. I never use a toner. I splash out on posh face cream once in a while but generally use Olay total effects daily and Nivea Q10 at night. Not expensive stuff. If you crack the right cleanser you can pretty much use any moisturiser I have found.

OnTrain · 24/12/2018 12:52

Thanks thevon I love lush so will try that one

AwkwardSquad · 24/12/2018 13:12

You are, yes, but your facial skin is more delicate and is constantly exposed to the elements, so it makes more of a difference. I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to skin care but I found it made a big difference when I started being more gentle with my skin.

Davros · 24/12/2018 15:00

You get your water needs from food, tea, other drinks as well as water. I don't think you need to drink 2L of water every day

Estellar · 24/12/2018 17:40

No your hydration doesn't need to come from plain old tap water or bottled. Tea, juice, even milk etc etc all hydrate you. I won't touch tap water and only drink it once it's been through the big filter which we couldn't really afford but wouldn't be without now. We use it for the kettle etc too

olympicsrock · 24/12/2018 17:51

Wow washing your face with shower gel - that’s the problem!

MalcolmsBrokenWalrusMoneybox · 24/12/2018 18:41

See it would seem to me to be a logical thing to do to wash my face with shower gel.
My face will be in the shower with me and it has skin on it.
Lordy have I been living under a rock.
