Depo injection

Hi ladies, I wrote the other week for opinions on the depo injection. I had it Tuesday gone because I was having irregular bleeding on the mini pill. I would be on 7 days or so then off for a week, 3 days or maybe more and come back on for 7+ days. Now I started another bleed last Saturday, had the depo the Tuesday by Wednesday night the bleeding had calmed down and wasn’t as heavy BUT I am still bleeding, very little compared to before but this is constant. I thought this morning I had stopped but within an hour of being up I realised I hadn’t. Anyone experienced this? The nurse did say it can cause a lot of spotting but this now is like a really light period. Thanks

I bled all the time with the depo. Gave up after the 2nd one. It also made me put on lots of weight

SamanthaH92 · 23/12/2018 21:13

@dementedpixie I mentioned the weight thing to the nurse and she said the only way I’d put on weight is if I didn’t watch what I was eating/over eating. Hope I don’t as I’ve just lost 3 stone 😞. Hoping the bleeding settles but miserable already over it x

Weight gain is a known side effect of depo

Following this as I'm also considering Depo and have heard about constant bleeding as a side effect!

MatchsticksForMyEyesReturns · 23/12/2018 21:16

I put on 2 stone and was miserable. Once I stopped it I lost it all within 6 months. I'd never recommend it to anyone.

Brazenhussy0 · 23/12/2018 21:17

You won't put on weight with depo unless you start eating more (contraceptives increase your appetite not your weight itself!)

I've been on depo for about 5 years now after I had an ectopic on the mini-pill. No problems at all with depo and my periods/any spotting stopped completely after the first 2 or 3 injections.
It can be completely different from person to person, but I'd give it a try for a bit longer.

dementedpixie · 23/12/2018 21:19

If you read the studies it is shown that it does cause weight gain and it's not just from eating more

mumonthehill · 23/12/2018 21:21

I have it and it has been fabulous. I no longer have mood swings, spots or periods. I do sometimes have spotting but it is very rare. It has totally changed my life and I now could not be without having it. Everyone is different but I have not had weight gain or any side affects, it has taken away all pmt symptoms.

MatchsticksForMyEyesReturns · 23/12/2018 21:26

I take Yasmin and run 2 packs together then have the break. I can cope with 6 periods a year and there's no irregular bleeding or other side effects.

Bonkerz · 23/12/2018 21:29

Depo here too and haven't had a period for 7 years! Weight has maintained for most of that too!

Brazenhussy0 · 23/12/2018 21:44

dementedpixie admittedly I haven't read any studies on depo, I'm just going on what my GP said when I was switched to it - that it can cause weight gain, but through increased appetite, so keeping an eye on food intake was advisable.

Personally, I've lost a significant amount of weight while on the depo injections (probably because I was watching my intake!) and haven't had a period in years now so I'm inclined to sing its praises Grin
But everyone is different.

bathtimesanity · 23/12/2018 21:45

I wouldn't OP- had it at 16 (under the recommendation of my doctor!) because I had really painful, heavy periods and I bled every day for the 13 weeks I was on it and was so suicidal. (Another known side effect!) didn't gain weight though.

Tiredemma · 23/12/2018 22:01

I gained a daughter ( surprise) on the depo....

itallhappensforareason · 23/12/2018 22:04

I bled constantly for 6 months on the depo. Not sure if it would have got any better as I decided to give up at that point.

Hersetta427 · 23/12/2018 22:07

I think you need to let in settle in properly. I have had depo injections for 4 years. Never had a period so I love it and put up with some of the side effects (for me it is much harder to loose weight)

Sallygoroundthemoon · 23/12/2018 22:14

I was suicidal on depo. A very frightening experience. I'm very sensitive to hormonal contraception and won't touch it now but how low I got on depo was scary. I also had breakthrough bleeding when I was prescribed anti depressants. Once it was out of my system I was fine. Never again.

Fatted · 23/12/2018 22:23

I went on the depo after advice from my doctor. I've been having very heavy periods since having kids and it's got so bad I was anemic. I was told the injection was the best thing to stop my periods completely. Since the summer, I've had 4 lots of random spotting and bleeding that lasts longer than my periods usually did. The last one was 2 weeks and nearly as heavy as my usual period.

My sex drive has absolutely nose dived and I have also been experiencing low moods and anxiety, which my DH is convinced is because of the injection.

The problem is one form of contraception can be perfect for one person and react terribly to another! I won't be getting it again. I'm not prepared to ride out another six months of an emotional rollercoaster in the hope that it will settle down if it's not even going to stop my periods.

dementedpixie · 23/12/2018 22:25

Depo made me bleed but both cerazette mini pill and the mirena coil stopped them completely

dementedpixie · 23/12/2018 22:26

Mirena can be used to treat heavy periods too

booboobutt · 23/12/2018 22:35

Don't go on the depo! It's a nightmare to come off. It messes your hormones up completely. It's used as a "chemical castration" for sex offenders in some states of America apparently, and I can believe it because it kills your sex drive. I've been off it 3 months now and I'm spotty, moody, bloated, headachey. Don't do it!

dementedpixie · 23/12/2018 22:43

It can delay return to fertility for up to a year (sometimes more) so if you want children soon bear that in mind too. It can thin your bones as well.
